- Rob GWetheral, United Kingdom106 contributionsInteresting small museumWe spent nearly 3 hours in the museum as we wanted a sedate day (after The High Flying Birds concert the night before) and really enjoyed it. The wildlife exhibition was well put together and the history of Leeds part was very interesting. The staff were also very keen to be helpful. There is an art area which unfortunately didn't appeal to us personally, but each to their own. It was very quiet for the time of year so we were able to do everything we wanted in our own time.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 December 2023
- LauraDaveJamesSolihull, United Kingdom5,223 contributionsWorth a VisitThe museum is free to enter and is located in an interesting Victorian building. We went to visit the history of Leeds exhibition which is on the top floor. The exhibition is not very large, but well laid out and we certainly learnt some things about Leeds which we didn’t previously know.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 1 January 2024
- Andy DBallymore, Ireland43 contributionsGo!We found this to be a really interesting place and spent much longer wandering around it than we thought we would. Great museum with plenty of quality exhibitions, particularly on the history of Leeds (as you would expect I suppose) but I was really surprised at the hip hop exhibition which was fascinating even though hip hop would not be of any interest to me at all. As a bonus there is a lovely airy cafe with friendly staff. A great location and highly recommended. Go visit when in Leeds.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 12 February 2024
- Michael HawksworthCleckheaton, United Kingdom11 contributionsExcellent visit to Leeds City MuseumI'd visited the museum several months ago but wished to visit the Upper floor which housed a collection of artifacts from Egypt including a mummy. I found the experience informative, relaxing and educational with plenty of areas to sit and take in the exhibits . Highly recommended.Visited February 2024Travelled soloWritten 14 February 2024
- sunrise99765 contributionsLeeds City MuseumFor a number of years I have snatched moments to visit the museum. Today I spent my lunch hour looking around. I picked a lovely quiet moment before a school party came in. The children seemed really excited. I only spent time on one floor this visit. Lots to see and do. I can recommend the attached cafe also. 😊Visited March 2024Travelled soloWritten 10 March 2024
- Trish C132 contributionsA great place to visit and it’s freeThe museum is housed in a lovely old building which set the tone for our visit. The museum is fascinating and it was great to see children engaging with the exhibits. The staff were friendly and welcoming. We had lunch in the cafe, a delicious soup which was just right on a wet afternoonVisited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 1 April 2024
- Heligirl73Horsham, United Kingdom99 contributionsA great place for all agesA free museum in the heart of the city, plenty to keep everyone occupied and entertained. We found the “Living with Death “ exhibition very moving but also uplifting and insightful. All of the staff were very friendly and approachable and are a real asset to the museum!Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 31 August 2024
- VisitorSheffield, United Kingdom6 contributionsSome good partsSome parts were good but some not. What was the Asian Voice section...brights colours and little substance? Nice area for children to stop and play and parents sit. Piano area was impressive. Also the stuffed animals area though lots of them were in darkened cabinets and we struggled to see them properly. We missed out the death section...no wonder young people get depressed! We need uplifting things. Nice shop. Cafe ok.Visited September 2024Travelled with familyWritten 13 September 2024

We were visiting Leeds for the day so decided to have a look at the museum, there weren't many people there so easy to social distance. There are lots of interesting items and information to see as you wander around the different floors. There is a great Natural History section on the ground floor and you can learn about the history of Leeds and its industry and people on the 2nd Floor and information about the different religions on the 3rd Floor. Oh dear, I am writing this over a week after and forgotten what was on the 4th Floor, but I am sure I found it very interesting at the time! It is free to visit.

We went specifically to see the Fast x Slow Fashion Exhibition. This was centred around the city of Leeds and charted fashion styles and local manufacturing since the 1700’s. It was very interesting and some of the more modern costumes and photographs prompted memories of our own shopping experiences in the 1970’s and thereafter. We also visited the wildlife section in the basement which was fabulous. The team were friendly and helped us on our visit.

Leeds City Museum is a wonderful attraction in Leeds that unfortunately when I chanced upon was closed as it was quite late at night but I loved the look of this building.
Constructed in 1819 from designs from architect Cuthbert Broderick, it originally opened as the Mechanics Institute.
I love the look of this building, its such a stately looking structure, its a building that certainly dominates the square, when I visit Leeds again I am most certainly going to visit this museum and check out the great exhibitions, easy to locate on Millennium Square, most definitely well worth checking out if you're in the area or planning to visit Leeds.

Visited this museum with a grumpy 10 year old and an only slightly happier 8 year old. Despite this unfortunate starting point, an enjoyable time was had by all, including me!
We were greeted at the entrance by an enthusiastic member of staff who was not put off by the grunts of the offspring, and offered free trails to do in the museum (declined) and pointed us in the direction of the free Halloween craft session. This was a hit with the 8 yr old, who enjoyed creating a cat from painted loo roll and bits of paper.
We then headed off to explore the museum. The exhibits had enough 'interactive' bits to keep the children engaged - things such as smells of medieval foods, rebuilding a roman piece of pottery, opening flaps to answer questions etc. The exhibits themselves were interesting, and the Egyptian mummy was a real highlight.
There also seemed to be an area teeming with 'small small' children - didn't brave it to find out more, but supported my impression that the museum works for all ages.
Easily enough to occupy you/your children for 1-2 hours, and is free.

The museum is really beautiful. It does not have that modern style which actually takes away from what you are viewing, but everything rather complements and supports the artefacts.
The ancient section, while having nothing spectacular other than the mummies, is very well presented. Lots of stuff for kids.
I feel the Leeds section is not as well presented, at least from the POV of a foreigner.
Finally, it is great to see the museum complying with the ESG values and exhibiting it through gender neutral bathrooms, and more importantly, training our chidren to raise their little fist bumps to become good little Marxists.

First visit to the museum and very disappointed. Exhibits were poorly lit and generally poorly displayed. Several interactive displays were not working and the hand written notices ( to let you know) were embarrassingly amateurish. As a major City, you would expect Leeds museum to be an exemplar. It isn't and I can't understand why the the leadership group is not expecting or delivering a higher standard.

Whilst visiting Leeds, I decided to have a look at the Museum. I found it tremendously interesting and was surprised to see in one of the main rooms, they had quite a large collection of taxidermy animals such as an elk, seal, different species of birds and much, much more. There were also a few interactive pieces, one in particular stood out to me as demonstrating the effect of erosion over time. Other rooms had a mixture of artefacts from different eras which were fun but also came across as slightly confusing due to them being in no particular time order or place, for example, there were an ancient Rome and Egyptian area together which made it hard to distinguish what artefacts belonged to which time frame. Overall I spent around two hours there and was thoroughly impressed by all the information/items that were on offer.

I don't regret going ( and it is free ) but to be honest for a city of Leeds's size it is a little underwhelming . Having a actual stuffed Thylacine was the high light for me although the fact they labelled it as a Tasmanian wolf ( not even the common term Tiger ) was a bit disappointing. Maybe the people running it should visit Liverpool Belfast or even Bristol to see what can be done

For families with kids ranging from 6 to 12 i think it s really worth going. Learning through examples and games is the best way. Every area has multiple games from puzzles to riddles or quests where the younger ones but not only can play and learn at the same time. One of the most interactive museums i ve seen, and it was really a pleasure for us as adults and for our 10 year old.
