Step back in time at Amberley Museum, a remarkable heritage site in the Sussex South Downs, between Storrington and Arundel, focusing on industrial and transport history.

Most days the bus service and narrow gauge railway run, which take visitors to the far end of the site where the electricity, communications and railway exhibition halls can be found.

Further exhibits include the working printshop, lime kilns, road steam engines, standard gauge line, stationary engines, greenwood village and more.

The Museum is home to traditional craftspeople, such as the woodturners and blacksmith, with a cafe, gift shop, playground, nature trails and picnic areas. It’s well worth a visit and there is plenty to do in all weathers.

We are hosting over 50 events in 2017 from children’s activity days to classic vehicle shows; from the amazing Robotslive in July to our new art activity week in August.

We open from 8th March to 29th October, seven days a week during Sussex school holidays and on Bank Holidays, otherwise Wednesday to Sunday.

Right next to Amberley railway station, with direct trains from London, Bognor and Portsmouth (check before you travel), we have a large, free carpark.

Please see our website for further information.

We visited this dog friendly location, and enjoyed the museum and all it has to offer. The day was made even better with a vintage and veteran motorcycle rally. Lots to see and experience and well worth the entry fee. The only other comment, letting a good day down, would be the Fairmile Cafe, which was struggling to cope and... More

Thank you very much for your review. I'm pleased to hear you enjoyed a good day out on our motorcycle event day. I'm sorry there was a long wait for service at the Fairmile Cafe. The issue is that it is an exhibit building (originally the roadside cafe at Fairmile Bottom) so we are very limited in how we can... More

We have been aware of this museum for a little while and an opportunity occurred to visit. We are glad that we did. The entrance fees are good value for what can be seen. The museum is located in a large disused chalk quarry and covers a large open area with a number of large "halls" containing exhibits. There are... More

Went here by accident. Had a great time - entrance fee covers steam train ride and vintage bus ride. Really varied interactive heritage related attractions. More to do here than somewhere like the Science Museum I thought. Teenager liked it. 10 year old liked it. Loses a point for the food, but that's the only criticism.

Thank you so much for your review. I'm intrigued to know how you visited by accident! But of course glad that you did and glad you and your teenager and 10 year old had a great time. Please come back and visit us on purpose next time! More

Amberley Museum is an award winning venue for dog friendliness. As a result, my wife and I and a friend brought two dogs to spend the day exploring the wealth of artifacts on display; all illustrating the social and industrial history of the recent past. This museum has something for everyone. The entrance area resembles a sleepy village with a... More

Thank you for your review of the Museum. I'm really pleased to hear you and your dogs had a good day here. We are aware of the situation with the outdoor cafe seating for dog owners, and will be implementing a solution as soon as we can. Thank you for the tip about the Lost Gardens of Heligan - I... This will bring back memories to some an fascinate those who don't. We had a nostalgic ride around the site on an old bus. The conducter was full of interesting information about each buildings contents. Just when we thought we had seen it all, we came across another display, from old Printing press, to home electrics. A good day out,... More

First we took the Southdown bus round the sight, the driver giving us brilliant guidance to the sight. We then wandered down the roads, past the various heritage crafts and exhibitions. Brilliant! Loved the telephone exchange, fire engines, the besom broom maker and the wood turner. All craftsmen chatted to us about their work. More people need to find this... More

This time the main purpose of our visit was to deliver a vintage Decca ffss stereo system together with a collection of classical and popular music vinyl records that were in good condition. This was gratefully received and the Museum is planning a future extension of the entertainment section For the time being our contribution will be kept in store... More

We spent five hours wandering around the 36 acre site; there was plenty to see around every corner, inside and out. Most of the staff were part time, and enthusiasts who really seemed to enjoy talking to people and explaining and demonstrating how everything was made and worked from a by-gone era. The cafeteria was large and the prices sensible... More
