- Jack KNewcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom99 contributionsGreat Train Station.A great historic train station. I’ve always found the staff to be friendly and helpful. There is a first claw lounge available for those with first class tickets on LNER operated trains which is nice, it has comfortable seats with charging points as well as tea, coffee, water, crisps and biscuits available. There is also pleanty of seating throughout the station. There is several shops located whi thin the station including a Sainsbury’s, Marks and Spencer, WHSmiths, Burger King, Cafe Nero, Boots and several others. There are also two bars, The Centurion and Destination 1850. The train station is easy to navigate and the recognise the Sunflower Lanyard (Hidden Disability Lanyard). There is also access to ‘Central’ Metro station from within the train station.Visited February 2024Travelled soloWritten 15 February 2024
- AlbywonSydney, Australia13,666 contributionsEffective People MoverThey have squeezed 12 platforms into a relatively small footprint here, assisted by 8 one way platforms vs only 4 through lines. Easy to navigate with a minimum of stairs. It's a central hub for LNER and a starting station for some Trans Pennine Services.Visited April 2024Travelled soloWritten 14 April 2024
- Tokyo JAnglesey, United Kingdom369 contributionsHistoric Train StationThis station is an excellent hub for exploring the north east of England by train. There are great facilities inside the station and the staff are always on hand to help you. Plenty of seating while you wait for your train. The shops are excellent from WH Smiths, Burger King, Boots, M&S and others.Visited May 2024Travelled soloWritten 17 May 2024
- Thomas VOakland, California17,572 contributionsHighly FunctionalLooks old fashioned and grand on the outside, but inside it is highly functional and busy. This is the city's main train station and where you will catch a train to another town. Some places for food and reading material inside.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 24 July 2024

Right in the middle of the city with great bus, taxi and metro links. Plenty of shops inside and just outside of the station too. Within reach of many of the main attractions Newcastle has to offer. Plenty of ticket machines available if needed. However, I got my tickets posted to me prior so the use of the machines were not necessary. Food and drinks inside the station are quite expensive but this is to be expected in a national rail station.

My group travelled when storm Ciara was raging across the country so train services were disrupted. There were a huge amount of travellers waiting to get onto the what seemed the only train from Newcastle to Edinburgh that morning and we were struggling as in my group was a wheelchair user, a poor mobility person and a young child. I asked a transpenine staff member if he could help in anyway and he was brilliant, he called for assistance from the LNER station staff and all three colleagues worked together and no only got us on board without any hassle from the other passengers, they placed us in the first class carriage. Thank you LNER and transpenine express you were more than just helpful you were fantastic.

We were staying in a hotel near the metro centre and in normal times would probably of used the train to come into the city centre from there but with covid wanted to avoid public transport when we had our own car. We googled where to park that was fairly central and not extortionately priced for parking as can be the case in city centres in particular. We were quite surprised to find that the railway station had firstly such a large car park and secondly that it was open to non users of the trains and that it was so reasonably priced! (I cant remember for sure but I think it was £5 for all day). So we arrived there for 9am as we wanted to have a full day in Newcastle, going to the museum and the castle and generally around the city centre. We found the car park easily and parked up and then walked through the train station and we were both very impressed with the architecture of the building and how it has still kept it looking good but serving modern requirements. Lovely and clean too.

Right in the centre of Newcastle you will find the central train station. It does exactly what is says on the tin! M&S and Sainsbury's for your sandwich plenty of coffee places a cafe bar in the ticket hall and a Boots chemist. If you are travelling from platform 3, avoid the Pumpkin cafe.... it is super expensive and the coffee is as week as water!

With great local bus and metro connections, this is the ideal place to break up a long journey for 3-4 hours. The city centre, museums, Metro Centre, etc are all easy access. And, of course, by buying two shorter journeys instead of one direct service on mainline trains, one can often save money.

I have mixed feelings about this station. I am used to very large train stations (I use BHX daily and EUS several times a year) and airports. What I find fundamental in both types of buildings are 1) signage and 2) accessibility
I came into Newcastle at 9:40 on a Friday night. Plenty of seats (why thank you!) but nothing to show where the taxi rank was (I found it, but had to traverse the drunk footie fans to get to it). Had I not done this kind of trip before, I would have been at a loss and felt very unsafe.
Got to the station on the Sunday morning with 50 minutes to go. Thank god I had the time to waste! Total lack of signage as to where my platform 6 was, and no lifts beyond platform 4. If there are other lifts, I couldn't spot them - I found the lift to platform 4 by accident and because I was specifically looking for it). Platform 6 is at the end of platform 5 (I found one small board, and something painted on the floor only after I asked the solo member of staff covering 5, 6, and apparently 7). To get to this platform, me (plus prezzie laden bag) had to go over a rather steep "bridge" (yes, it needed to be taller than then trains, I get it). God forbid a more physically impaired traveller was not around - inertia meant I had to control my bag as I went down the ramp - I dont think free wheeling was a foreseen benefit when designing this).
I'd had a big breakfast (and a 1st class ticket) on purpose, so apart from visiting WHSmiths, I didn't partake of any of the vendors. There seemed to be a reasonable variation on the main part of the concourse, but after that, I was more focussed on getting to my platform. Thankfully there were plenty of seats available. I have zero idea about the toilet facilities.

Our taxi driver was extremely rude. Furthermore, when we paid at the end of the trip, he conveniently said he didn't have any change, thereby giving himself a hefty tip. We told our hotel receptionist of our unpleasant experience and he said that they regularly have guests complain about the public taxis outside the Central Station and to not mistake these drivers for the professionals that the London taxi drivers are. He said he advises everyone to take a private taxi service, not the public taxis. Wish we would have known before our not-so-warm welcome to Newcastle.

Was travelling with a disabled person. Lift wasnt working, had to struggle over the bridges over the tracks. Trains were delayed due to a problem further down country and Staff were hopeless with information. We were only going to Durham so we gave up and got a lift home only to find the train left soon after, despite staff saying it could take hours! oh yes, theyre going to give me £2.40 back for the inconvenience!

Pre booked assistance staff not on platform waiting to take me to my next train, no other station staff to be seen anywhere. As a result of this, I could not get to the platform on my own and missed my connection on my pre booked train. No apology from anyone on northern trainline, still waiting for a refund for having to pay more to catch the next train.

Newcastle Central is a grand, magnificent Victorian train station, befitting one of the early major centres of rail industry and development. It is attractive and modern updates largely leave intact the historic character. It is easy to use with a long ramp and upper walkway going over the platforms. It is clean and his some nice amenities and shops. It is also conveniently located in the heart of Newcastle. We spent a day here, taking the train from Durham in the morning and leaving in the evening, with the train ride lasting less than 15 minutes.

Hi does anyone know if you can hire a wheelchair at the station or anywhere around it?
Written 23 October 2019
I had a quick G****e: Wheelchairs available Monday - Sunday 04:30 - 02:00, but no details on how to arrange them. Help from Customer Information Point in main concourse.

Hello. Does anyone know if the parking is easy (once in the car park)? It looks small on a map and I wonder if it's usually full and difficult to get a space? I will be travelling mid-afternoon on a Friday. Thank you.
Written 31 October 2018
The car park is small. You get 20 mins free parking if you press the green button on the ticket machine. If you are dropping off there is a small drop off only spot outside the Marks and Spencer area. You should be OK that time of day. Just pull in and wait for a space.
