Re-live the glorious days of the steam railway at Stephenson Railway Museum! The Museum is home to George Stephenson's 'Billy', a forerunner of the world- famous Rocket, and many other engines from the great age of steam. A programme of free events runs throughout the year, and train rides on working steam and diesel locomotives are available at certain times (check the website for details).

We visited this attraction as part of a family Christmas event with Great Grandparents, Grandparents, Parents and Children spanning ages from 85 to 6 months. A really lovely experience on a cold misty day. The staff were wonderful with Elves, Dickensian singers and story tellers, musicians and of course a Father Christmas who was very authentic and good natured. The... More

This place is a great place to visit at weekends or school holidays. Their was a "Thomas the Tank Engine" day the day we went. Great fun, even for big kids like me. Full of local history and you get to ride on a real steam engine. Food was very average and in my opinion costly for what it was.

A lovely day out, especially in the sun. The train ride though short, was impressive enough. The museum is also good, very impressive range of steam engines for such a small and rural place. Little Thomas the tank engine entertained out LO a lot :-). It is a pleasant walk from Cobalt Business park.

I visited "Day out with Thomas" last week and was so disgusted with the event that I email the organisers whilst at the event and asked for a response before I posted my review. As I have had no response I will post the email I sent: Dear Sir I am writing to complain about the recent Day Out With... More

Very disappointed at our day out with Thomas!!! Very unprofessional organisation, the only Thomas and friends train we saw was Thomas himself!!! The other trains were generic steam engines with a mask stuck to the front, which didn't even fool my 21/2 year old!!! The train ride was on a generic green steam train with a phoney mask, which left... More

After visiting several Heritage Railway attractions with the Dog I was surprised to be (politely) informed that family dogs were not allowed at the Stephenson Railway Museum. Assistance dogs are allowed. As a result we did not enter.

We arrived just in time to take the steam train ride. It doesn't go anywhere other than through pleasant byways in a built up area. You pay for the train ticket but the museum itself is free. Good range of exhibits in the museum including some of historic signifance I was assured by my train buff husband. I liked the... More

Handy short work to city centre and hotels and The Sage. Wide platforms so you do not feel crushed. Pleasant attentive staff.
