It is always a pleasure to revisit the art and exhibitions but I was really impressed with the quality and value of the food on offer in the cafe. Great baked potato and salad 😋 - not many places in town can compare!

Thye Laing is a gem in the city's heart. So much to enjoy. We also liked the restaurant with its selection of paintings

The museum management gives the impression of unfriendly and insane, illogical thinking people. How dare you make Sunday the day the gallery is closed?

A lovely, easy access building with a beautiful collection, particularly of local artists. I would have enjoyed learning more about Hedley, Carmichael etc and the scenes they painted. Pleasant coffee shop with some lovely works to enjoy with your bun and cuppa. It's a free museum but certainly deserves a donation

I really want to say something positive about the Laing as a local city museum. Unfortunately, the latest exhibition 'The Essence of Nature' feels far from 'significant' as described on their website. It only takes up 2 of the gallery rooms which, for the the £10 entry fee (Full Rate), makes it an expensive visit. The content is rather dull, the lighting is poor and the information panels lack any real insight. So, not much to recommend really. If you are visiting the Laing, stick to the permanent collection which is free (you can always donate if you want to). Look out for Holman Hunt's Isabella and the Pot of Basil and Clauson's The Stone Pickers. Don't visit the café - it's awful!

Thank you for visiting us and providing feedback on your experience. We were sorry to read that you did not enjoy your recent visit. The Essence of Nature exhibition features over 100 oils and watercolours, including loans from national collections and significant regional galleries. Special lenses are being used to create an even light spread rather than a spot effect and the project has been a labour of love for our curatorial team to bring it all together for visitors to enjoy. The exhibition standard entry price is £8 per adult, children aged 12 and under go free, and there is also a concessionary price ticket. Without this income we would be unable to undertake our exhibition programme. We are glad, you enjoyed the collection galleries and appreciate the suggestion to donate. If you have any further comments to make in particular with regard to the café please email us at info@laingartgallery.org.uk. Thank you again for your feedback Julie Milne Chief Curator

We visited on a weekday lunchtime when it was relatively quiet. We'd made a special journey to view the 'Essence of Nature' exhibition which costs the better part of £20 for two adults. There is a wonderful variety of work to view - however the gallery lighting does not do justice to these amazing works of art, as the glare from the spotlights makes it impossible to appreciate the subtleties of light and shade, which are so intrinsically important to these paintings.
The labels for the paintings range from the non existent (no information at all for Harold Knight's In the Springtime) to the irrelevant (random mentions of 'climate change' displayed next to certain paintings). However the really grating moment came as we encountered three museum staff congregated beneath one of the paintings, having a very loud chat which included some NSFW language and definitely detracted from the calm atmosphere of the exhibition. We reached out to the Gallery about this but received no response. Perhaps there is a staff training issue here? Beautiful paintings nonetheless.

Thank you for visiting us and providing feedback on your experience. We were very concerned to learn that you experienced staff using NSFW language during your recent visit. This is a matter to be discussed with the immediate team and it would help us greatly if you could provide some further information by emailing info@laingartgallery.org.uk including the date of your visit and how you initially reached out to us, as none of our usual communication lines have received your complaint. We are though glad, you enjoyed the beautiful paintings in the exhibition. There are over 100 oils and watercolours, including loans from national collections and significant regional galleries. The exhibition standard entry price is £8 per adult, children aged 12 and under go free, and there is also a concessionary price ticket. Without this income we would be unable to undertake our exhibition programme. Regarding lighting, we are using special lenses that create an even light spread rather than a spot effect. Nevertheless, we are aware that unfortunately for a few loan pictures there are some reflections, in one instance due to glazing and in another due to a high-gloss varnish on the canvas. We are sorry that the label for Harold Knight's 'In the Spring' went missing for a short period, and it was rapidly replaced. The exhibition has a nature theme, and 4 pictures have labels which briefly mention the environment. Thank you again for your feedback. Julie Milne Chief Curator

A small gallery of about a dozen rooms of primarily British artists. Highlights for me were the Breton Shepherdess by Gauguin and the Destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah by John Martin. One can view the exhibits in about an hour. It is worth a visit.

Stunning art gallery, loved the variety of art forms presented. Additionally the day I went there was an ancient Egyptian art exhibit. So interesting and beautiful.
