Thank you for your lovely review. We are very fortunate to have wonderful historic architectural features in our gallery. The Hatton Gallery is currently closed for a £3.8 million redevelopment, but I hope that you will visit again when we reopen in autumn 2017. There is nothing exciting to be seen inside the gallery. You do find student exhibition work here from time to time, which aren't much more than student work.

Last exhibition before a major refurbishment- interesting and esoteric collection on show featuring modern pieces(Francis Bacon) and local ,national and international artists some who were students. And the Mertz Wall !! Catch it before it closes in February

I visit the Hatton from time to time and called in today to see the Lawrence Kavanagh exhibition and the "Unsensed" collection. Some of which I appreciated and some was difficult to interpret. It is always worth a look even if some exhibits are not to your taste it is a refreshing challenge to view them. The Merz barn by... More

As a student at Newcastle University I have walked passed the Hatton Gallery for years, however, recently when friends came to visit I decided to take them there to kill some time after lunch. The art was as to be expected from art students but the building, with its hidden corridors, staircases and door ways provided an afternoon of entertainment.

This exhibition at the Hatton is simply excellent. It is crammed with images and writings from soldier artists and writers of the First World War. Although not an extensive exhibition it is deeply profound and moving. It is particularly moving to see manuscript drafts of some of the seminal poetry to have come out of this war to end all... Bang in the old centre of the Newcastle University - very attractive in its own right since Union building done up - older entrance with steps is charming, but newer lift area down the road. Always got a range of modern exhibitions worth browsing - something might attract the eye! Kurt Schwitters' barn installation wall, with good information panels, rom... More

This gallery is in Newcastle University campus off Barras Bridge, but part of Tyne and Wear Museums. Entry is free. We visited last week when there was an exhibition of modern art from the 60s and 80s, a real time lapse display, and a photo gallery of influential women of the northeast. All were interesting in their own ways, but... More
