One of Newcastle's many iconic monuments. Nothing to see specifically but always something happening at ground level. Often just a place for people to congregate with no purpose but if you like people watching this is a great spot!

If you are Greys Monument then you are in the centre of Newcastle and close to Intu Eldon Square which has all of the standard shops you would expect. Heading down Grey Street takes you to the Quayside which has some good restaurants on Grey Street and some good bars on the main part of the Quayside. Try out the... More

Statue on top of a tall plinth, a la Neson's Column, except the square around it is no Trafalgar Square. I wouldn't go out of my way to see it, but if you are walking around the city you will come across it.

I didn't know much about Earl Grey before reading the information boards around the monument and so I found those very interesting. The monument itself is quite impressive, but I wouldn't go out of my way to see it.

This fabulous monument is a tribute to Earl Grey. It was put up in response to the passing of the Great Reform Act which brought the vote to many more people. He was also Prime Minister when slavery was abolished. The sculpture is by Edward Hodges Bailey who is also responsible for Nelson's column in London. It's a focal point,... More

Going up Grey's Monument in Newcastle is an experience you shouldn't miss, if you can climb the 160 odd steps that lead you to the top. Up there you'll have the best views of the city centre and a wonderful perspective of the city's history. Well worth the effort!

This is only open occasionally on Saturdays in the summer, check the City guides website, or at the nearby City Library, and book in advance. Access is via a small door and a very narrow windy staircase to the top- fabulous views of the city once you have made it, though! The monument was built to celebrate the life of... More
