We very much liked this monument, and learning about its history. My favourite anecdote was when, in 1941, lightning struck, and the poor Earl’s head fell off, crashing onto the tram lines below, fortunately causing no injuries to anyone walking beneath. Although I think that...More

In the centre of the square the monument stands as a beacon to history and the economic activity that seems to be bulging on all the streets, including the Sir John Franklin pub.

An iconic landmark of Newcastle and monument to Charles Grey, the 2nd Earl Grey. It's position at the top of a hill and the junction of several a lot streets makes it clearly visible from a long way off. It's an impressive 130 something metres...More

This is a great historic monument that sits in the heart of central Newcastle like a mini Nelson’s Column. All around is the wonderful architecture of Graingertown and the whole area makes for a great walk.

This is the tall column topped with a statue of Lord Earl Grey, the 19th century Prime Minister and reformer. Due to its height, this column serves as a great meeting place as it can be spotted from a distance in most directions.

Newcastle is a fairly large city so having a place to set your bearings is always great. It sticks out fairly well in the skyline.

By locating the landmark, it is a great way of keeping your bearings on the city centre in prosepctive. All directions feed into the landmark, so makes it easier the navigate the city centre.

Passed by here on the way to exhibition Park. It’s often got something going on around its base. I remember going up inside to the top when I was a kid. A shame it’s not open these days.
