Description:

The General Cemetery opened in 1836 'at some distance in the countryside'...

The General Cemetery opened in 1836 'at some distance in the countryside' in a 'remote and undisturbed' location. It became established as the principal burial ground in Victorian Sheffield containing the graves of 87,000 people.

The site today is a Grade II* listed park which is the highest listed in Sheffield, and one of only four in South Yorkshire. It is a Conservation Area, Local Nature Reserve and Area of Natural History Interest.

One of the earliest commercial cemeteries in Britain, it contains the largest collection of listed buildings and monuments in Sheffield, ten in total including Grade II listed catacombs, Anglican Chapel and monuments with the Gatehouse, Non-conformist Chapel and the Egyptian Gateway, each listed at Grade II*.

There is the largest single grave plot in the country, holding the bodies of 96 paupers.

It is also home to many important figures in Sheffield history such as Mark Firth, the steel manufacturer, and Samuel Holberry, the Chartist.

The Cemetery was closed for burial in 1978, when half the Cemetery was demolished to make way for a green space.

The Sheffield General Cemetery Trust carries out education tours and workshops; conservation work to maintain and enhance the monuments, the landscape and the paths; and historical research of the Cemetery and its occupants. The aim is to encourage everyone to enjoy this historical site by walking its paths, learning its history or simply as a quiet place to sit and contemplate.

I found myself with a spare half an hour and spent a lovely time exploring this cemetery recently on a sunny day.

Like many old cemeteries or graveyards in industrial towns and cities, Sheffield's General Cemetery speaks of past times - the great and the good, the poor and downtrodden. The styles of stone carving, the language, the decoration - they all reveal aspects of nineteenth century life in a booming industrial town. For me, the most significant grave in the cemetery... Have been through the cemetery hundreds of times and today went on a little guided tour which was very interesting despite the inclement weather. The cemetery has always been a nice place for a walk and it was really good to have a little more info about it. Would really recommend the tour - just be aware that it is... More

We stumbled across the cemetery after a meal on Eccleshall Road. It has a feel of grandeur from times past and it holds many famous residents such as Firth of Sheffield University fame. We loved the architecture and the quiet green feel of the place.

This is an astonishing find in the city, somewhat overgrown but with magnificent memorials to the great and the good in Victorian Sheffield.

The cemetery used to be a real place of adventure before the council turned much of it into a rather grotty park. Still worth a visit if you're in that part of Sheffield though.

I have lived in Sheffield many years and only now found myself visiting this wondrous place.I took a morning stroll round here on a Saturday morning .It is only 2 mins away from the bustling shops and restaurants of Ecclesall road to come across the different world of the general cemetery. It is so sad so many stones are still... More

My favourite place in sheffield to just go and sit and chill out. Its like a fairtale setting all year round! Autumn is best though! The volunteers who help with the upkeep of the cemetery are amazing! Its just such a lovey space and needs loving for everyone to enjoy!!!

This is a stunning Victorian cemetery right in the heart of Sheffield, it has obviously been the target of vandals over the years but is well maintained – although slightly overgrown in places. Clearly the final resting place of many of Sheffield’s great and good who seemed to like to model there graves on the old Egyptian features!
