Great to discover the industrial history of Sheffield, seeing how things were manufactured, seeing the Crucible workshop how they made crucibles, the counting house is amazing, seeing the old desk and ledger, amazing water wheels, loads to see, would think some things would be more interesting when the objects are running. Could do with some more interactive things. Overall a... More

The site has such an interesting collection of workshops with original tools and wheels with some unique features too. There's a video to set the scene as well as a time line and then you just make your way round. It is compact but also stuffed with artefacts. There are enthousiastic volunteers around to point things out and answer your... More

A step back in time viewing how people worked and lived at the hamlet, forging scythes. Interesting to view the workers cottage and difference with the managers house An interesting place to visit. Very nice cafe selling hot and cold drinks, sandwiches, paninis etc. Sandwich we had was tasty and freshly made. Eating area impeccably clean and modern.

It brought back memories of how things were in our home as a child. Also reminders of the forge at school. Yes we really did learn some stuff like that all those years ago. It makes for a good morning or afternoon out. There is a nice cafe area with good coffee and some really great cakes and other food... More

This is a little gem in Sheffield and well worth a visit. It shows the style of accommodation and way the workers in a metal working foundry used to live and work. There is also a working water wheel and good descriptions of how the work was done. The cottages are furnished to show the standards of living between the... More

Today I took 6 children of various ages from 18 months to 9 years old for a visit. It was a first visit for all of the children and they really enjoyed it. We had help from 2 volunteers who were very knowledgable and were happy to talk to the older children who had questions and were interested in everything... More

We spent a wonderful couple of hours here soaking up the history. Everything is so well-preserved and explained by self-guided tour that you can really imagine what it was like here in this tiny place that was one of the places at the heart of the Industrial Revolution. Not just the technical facts, but how the people actually lived.

Having been let down by somewhere else that should have been open on at least a day of school hols. but wasn't, we decided to try 'Abbeydale'. Our grand-daughter really enjoyed it - especially having the info. on I-Pad. I should imagine that in better weather it would be even better.

Been meaning to visit The Abbeydale for years and finally got round to doing it, we were disappointed we had left it so long. Great to see the workshops and machinery as it was when it was in full production. Great to talk to the volunteers who bring to life the atmosphere of the site. Well worth a visit. Next... More
