An 18th-century house, a 1950s homeThis is a story of grandeur created, dissolved and resurrected - not once, but twice.Basildon Park is an impressive Georgian mansion, surrounded by glorious parkland, which was lovingly rescued from ruin by Lord and Lady Iliffe in the mid 1950s. The house you see today is a re-creation and restoration of the 18th-century mansion. They restored the elegant interior and scoured the country salvaging 18th-century architectural fixtures and fittings. They filled their comfortable new home with fine paintings, fabrics and furniture, which can still be enjoyed by visitors today.

A nice walk though the house at Christmas was enough to keep two boys happy, searching for hidden birds, and playing with old kitchen utensils. We avoided the cafe, and instead walked through the 12 days of Christmas trail in the grounds, enjoyed by the kids. One note to NT, please invest in better hot drinks machines, as the coffee... Although the day we went there were activities for children with walks through the woods and other things to 'spot' the actual guided tour of the house was boring and long-winded. There were children in the group and at no time did the guide bring anything down to their level. Switched them off completely. We mentioned this at the office... More

We arrived at Basildon Park in our motorhome and were greeted warmly by the carpark attendant and guided into a suitable space. The staff on reception made a fuss of our Collie and my husband enjoyed a walk around the grounds while I explored the house. A chap was playing the grand piano which perfectly complemented the Christmas atmosphere. The... More

One of my favourite national trust places. Superb walks , gardens and a lovely house. Worth a visit during the Christmas season as they do a great job in making this fun for everyone especially children. Nice sized cafe that serves some good food and drinks. Try some of their walks they are well colour coded and not too testing.

We went to see the house in its Christmas decorations. As with all NT houses there is just too much history in stone, wood and paintings to absorb in one visit and with each visit (we live 8 miles away) we see and learn another facet of the building's history. One thing we did miss this year: By the Christmas... More

A friend and I decided to go for a lovely walk around Basildon Park, thru fields and woodland (there are actually 3 different signposted walks, varying in length) and then stop off in the cafe for lunch. The lunch options all looked lovely and seemed to all be made on the premises, inc fab cakes. We'll be back.

The house has been decorated for Christmas with trees, garlands and other bits and pieces. Worth an extra visit at this time of year. Lots of walks of various lengths in the grounds and of course the usual NT fare available in the cafe and shop.
