Probably would have been good if we’d booked
It looked really nice. We enquired about pricing and they gave us the information and time slots. When we returned later, about 45 minutes before the time slot we wanted, we were told it was fully booked. Would have been helpful to be given that information earlier when we’d been enquiring, or be encouraging but the ticket then. Very disappointed little girl, but oh well.

    Hidden gem of a museum
We went to the museum with our three year old and did the under 5's Small World's session, which our daughter loved. The host Lucy was amazing, and when we bumped into her later in the Galleries, she went above and beyond to make our daughter happy. Lucy is a true asset to the museum and made our daughters day. The Galleries are great with lots of exhibits to see and special book themed rooms. Narnia was our daughter's favourite. I'd thoroughly recommend it for families visiting Oxford.

    Great family experience
Visited for a Lego workshop and the youngest went to the small worlds area. Great time had by all. A fantastic place in the heart of the city that feels like you’re in another world. Cycle storage inside the venue was appreciated and the cafe was excellent. Really family friendly and lots of options for picky eating kids! We will definitely visit the cafe again if in this part of town even if we don’t go to the museum. Excellent coffee for the grown ups too. Museum staff were really friendly and welcoming with clear directions.

    Magical
I honestly think this is one of the best museums I have ever visited. My children (5 and 7) were entranced the whole way through, as was I. The guides were knowledgeable and so enthusiastic which just added to the experience. We went to the gallery and the City of Stories audio-visual experience. My children loved the City of Stories and although I was slightly concerned it wouldn't hold their attention, I was very wrong! The gallery itself, I thought was magical. We spent 3 hours there and could easily have spent longer (despite the advertised average time spent at the museum being a lot less). My children loved the make your own story room as well as Narnia and they also loved the Brilli-Ant exhibition. The whispering wood at the beginning was beautiful and both loved listening to the stories. In fact we spent over an hour in there alone. I think it probably helped that it was very quiet when we went (although it was a weekend and school holidays) as I think some of the magic would be lost if you were queueing for the rooms. But as I've said, we had a wonderful time, thank you.

    fun day out
Fun place to take our nephew. He loved listening to all the stories. He even became a little story teller himself. The staff are amazing and encourage the children to explore and challenge themselves.as an adult I really enjoyed it and I loved their recycling installation
Thank you for your lovely review and we look forward to the next Chapter in your nephew's storytelling!

    Embrace your inner child!
Visited with 2 friends, we are all adult bookworms and had a marvellous time. Some aspects are clearly aimed at families and children but we all embraced our inner child. We enjoyed the traditional stories in the whispering wood and loved having the worlds of our childhood memories brought to life in the enchanted library. A really magical experience.

More to it than you might realise
It will surprise you how big and therefore how many things they can have going on, for all ages. We saw Tom Thumb, which was OK, and have seen other stories in the past. It has a lovely cafe and a really nice shop, so well worth a visit themselves.

    Absolutely Fabulous!
Thankfully, I ignored the negative reviews I read on here. The Story Museum is a fabulous place. I took my 8 and 10 year old daughters and we were greeted by warm and friendly staff. They explained how everything worked and the different areas we would go into. The Wood is excellent. A selection of myths and legends await. Staff are wonderful and my little girl was mesmerised by a unicorn story which the lady in the wood told her. We moved onto the Ant section. The girls enjoyed this a lot and spent time exploring everything. We had tickets for the City of Stories and popped out of the Library area. The film was wonderful and has given the children a few more books they'd like to read. We stopped for lunch and then headed back to the Library area. The different sections are so interesting for the children. We arrived at 1100 and left at 1600. It was a fabulous day. The girls loved it and so did I. Every single member of staff added to our day. Highly recommended!
Thank you for such a lovely review - and so pleased to hear that you made the most of your day ticket. Come back soon - we've got an amazing new Dragons exhibitions opening in the summer holidays...!

    Great place to take toddlers
Fun morning out at the Story Museum, my little one enjoyed listening to the story read by the wonderful staff member before running around and enjoying some free play in the lovely play area. Highlights were the bus, sensory room, and the crafts. Looking forward to coming back again.

Conversation is encouraged as underpinning the engaging exhibitions. All set in a gorgeous building.

The Whispering Wood is a novel presentation. History of the city told in story and imaginary tales are diverting and enjoyable.

Small worlds is a fantastic activity with small children (under 5s)! The story tellers are all fun and energetic, and there's lots for kids to play with.

Some really lovely areas and ideas - the Narnia, Alice and Winnie the Pooh areas in the Enchanted Library were gorgeous, and my 4-year old loved the displays of different books and characters. Welcoming staff who put the children at their ease and introduced it well. The experience was really ruined, however, by the relentless brain-bashing in the "Treasure House" bit, where it was like Extinction Rebellion had sponsored displays on protest, climate-change fear-mongering, and tear-up-the-old-order-style subversion. Why can't children be encouraged to love and care for nature under threat without it turning into a political manifesto, totally inappropriate for their age and understanding? Worse, areas devoted to M. Blackman's "Noughts and Crosses" were presented to children regardless of age (if you've read it, it's totally inappropriate for anyone under 13!) and "The Art of being Normal" - again, a completely politicised attempt at shoving transgenderism and a woke agenda down our children's throats! Coupled with a queer/drag event advertised loudly in the entrance area! This is less a museum about stories, than the embodiment of a one-sided political agenda aimed at the most vulnerable in society.

The Story Museum's vision is to enrich lives, especially young lives, through story. Stories play an important role in helping us all to question our assumptions and broaden our understanding. Our Brilli-ANT exhibition around climate change has been devised with a panel of experts and in consultation with families, teachers and young people and is specifically designed to combat climate anxiety and offer young people the opportunity to discuss these issues and highlight positive changes that individuals can take if they so wish. We are delighted that this exhibition has been shortlisted for the Museums and Heritage Sustainability Award this year. When it comes to the stories that feature in our Gallery spaces, we aim to nurture an inclusive culture across all areas of our creative programme and collection, one that promotes equity, challenges discrimination and values diversity. We are committed to ensuring that our programme reflects the diversity of stories in all forms and the diversity of those who create and share those stories.

We spent a couple of hours here and to be honest, left slightly underwhelmed. For £60 I expected a bit more.
The staff were great in trying to get everyone involved, but after 15 mins or so in each room you could tell the kids were losing interest quickly. There was just not enough going on.

What great value for money. Can stay there all day if you want to. Area for small kids aswell as the galleries. I pay £3 extra to go to the craft shed to see story tellers throughout the history of Oxford. My six year old really enjoyed it. There had been some changes since the last time I went. The interactive ant room was fun and educational, helping recycling in a fun way. The library is great and enjoyed trying to find things on our passports. Still love the lion, the witch and the wardrobe room. Lovely cafe which was not over priced and offered health snacks for the kids.
