We arrived and the place was rammed, people queuing 10 deep, we almost left but as if by magic a table emptied so we ordered.
These guys are SLICK, despite every table being full our food came out in 15 minutes, and it’s a big restaurant.
I had the big fish and chips and it was perfect, crispy batter on the fish, it came with bread and a pickled onion, peas and ‘scampi’ (two pieces in a little bowl). Was it worth £15? Given the quick turnaround and the quality of the food, 100%

Very little to say but don't miss going here. Really good food and drink. Staff great. It was very busy when we went but you don't feel rushed. Food arrived quickly. Staff very professional and friendly. An Oxford gem

You never just drop by the Turf. You are only specially taken there by someone who has been there, generally someone who lives in Oxford and knows where to go. There are no signs, and no way of knowing that if you sneak into the narrow alley just behind the "Bridge of Sighs" at Hertford College, and follow it to your right, get past the stacks of kegs and trash, that you will come upon an almost-secret pub where, apparently, Bill Clinton did *not* enhale. It's one of the larger pubs for central Oxford, with several inside rooms, cosy in the winter, and a large outdoor sitting area with heating. We eat here often just for lunch because their fish and chips is some of our favorite in Oxford, and their service is amazing. The bartenders/waiters are really friendly and will tell you what is best to order and give you samples of the beers. Ive never been there when it wasn't busy but was always able to get a seat. It's also a special locale for academic groups, professors and esteemed guests included, to meet after forums and roundtables. If you are in need of lunch or just want to check it it out, just look for all the tourists standing under the bridge for pictures, and walk past them to the alley to the left, smugly.

I got shown this little gem by a friend, we stayed for 2 rounds and some triple cooked chips. I liked the selection of ciders and tap beers. Cool atmosphere

This 13th century establishment is the ultimate English pub! It has the atmosphere, the drink and the food to match any image you might come up with. And, there is the challenge of finding it amidst the winding lanes of this university city. It is actually located down a tiny space between buildings off a narrow lane in the middle of one of the colleges, to the north of High Street - that's the best I can do. Just ask a student and they will tell you how "easy it is to find," but don't believe them when they say "and you'll see the sign." We walked past it at least twice. The address is actually 4-5 Bath Place.
Anyway, once there, either sit on the patio (if the day is sunny it will be crowded) or inside, under the low ceilings that sheltered the likes of Thomas Hardy, Richard Burton and Bill Clinton. Their Yellow Rose beer had the most hop of any I had in the country and my wife greatly enjoyed their cider offering. The food is classic Brit pub fare. I had the home-made steak and ale pie and my wife had smothered chicken - both delicious. However, you can also get risotto, salmon Nicoise and lighter fare as well - wraps, burgers, soup, chicken wings. As with most pubs, you order at the bar, which is squeezed into the tiny entry room from the patio, but they bring the drinks and food to your table.
The fun is in being there, huddled at a table in a small room with ancient beams just above you, thinking of all the great scholars, writers, personages who have passed this way. There are some larger tables for families. Just relax and breathe in the history.

Not sure how you could raise a yard-glass in this place unless you're really short or kneel down - but great to come and have a pint in this hallowed place of okker fame!

The Turf is rather a nice pub - if you can find it. The food is fine, the drinks are reasonably priced and there's a large outside dining area. The downsides are that during summer this pub can get very crowded and it can also be difficult to get served during these busy periods because the main bar is tiny. The upsides are that the food is pretty good, and the staff are pleasant and attentive.

After a thilling match of real tennis we found ourselves famished and in need of sustenance. The tales of those political giants such as Clinton or Hawke will not be delved into her but the history of the place attracted me none the less. The service was able the food whilst appearing normal fare was delicious and atmosphere was excellent. All in all I would return if given the chance.
