About
The world-famous Bodleian Libraries is a must-see cultural destination in the heart of Oxford. The Bodleian Library was founded by Sir Thomas Bodley and officially opened in 1602. Since then the Bodleian libraries has grown to be the largest academic library system in the UK. In its reading rooms generations of famous scholars have studied through the ages, amongst them monarchs, Nobel Prize winners, British Prime Ministers and writers including Oscar Wilde, C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien. At the site, you can explore historic spaces that you might recognise from popular films and TV series such as Harry Potter and A Discovery of Witches. We also offer free, inspiring exhibitions featuring the libraries’ rich collections, two unique gift shops and a lovely café.

- Outandabout!Khao Lak, Thailand8 contributionsGreat tourWe booked the 1 hour tour. Jess was an enthusiastic and well-informed tour guide. We booked online the morning of the tour. Only feedback, was that the start point wasn’t clear and we had to ask at the reception of the Weston Library who then guided us to where we needed to go and then Jess found us. Luckily we had allowed enough time for this little run-around (just) Thank you for the tour.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 19 September 2023
- TerpNZSL3 contributionsDo this tour, you will be glad you did!Wonderful tour, worth every penny! Our guide Sian was knowledgeable and able to explain a lot of fascinating historical detail about this unique institution in a very digestible way. Loved the special scent of the Bodleian books and sitting at a table in place since 1642. Also some good location vibes here for Harry Potter fans. Long may the Bodleian thrive 🙏Visited September 2023Travelled soloWritten 21 September 2023
- Franziska L1 contributionGreat tour!We had a really fun time! Our guide Joanna was very friendly, explained so many interesting things about the different buildings we saw, told us some anecdotes and answered all of our questions in detail. On the tour, we got to see many historic buildings of Oxford from the outside and even went inside Corpus Christi College. It was a great way to get an overview of Oxfords city centre. Highly recommend it!Visited September 2023Travelled with familyWritten 24 September 2023
- Hester GAylesbury, United Kingdom5 contributionsWalking tour outsideWithout doubt the highlight of our visit to Oxford. We were unable to book a tour inside the Library so chose a 2 hour walking tour with Dave. We are a family of 4 with 11 and 15 year old daughters and were worried they would get bored, how wrong we were! Dave was such an engaging tour guide and even highlighted some of the Harry Potter locations to interest my girls. We were able to see inside the Divinity school which enthralled my girls. Dave was good enough to highlight some of the Colleges to go and see and even the oldest pub in Oxford (which we found at the end of the day and had a lovely meal). The tour made our day in Oxford and was just the right length of time. I would wholeheartedly recommend booking one, especially if you are lucky enough to get David as your tour guide.Visited September 2023Travelled with familyWritten 24 September 2023
- Evenstar2 contributionsBeautiful, invaluable gift to the peopleI was really interested in doing the tour of this tour and had to go to the ticket office when it opened the next day as they were sold out. We got tickets without problem, I was so happy. Robbie, our tour guide was brilliant, knowledgeable and entertaining. The history of this place is fascinating, some information was very moving and brought a tear to my eye. This library holds all our most precious treasures for future generations and is so hugely important to our culture. I hope it survives the next battle that is coming.Visited September 2023Travelled with familyWritten 25 September 2023
- Norma MWilliamstown, Massachusetts1 contributionAmazing tour with DaveOur guide, Dave, was amazing. He has a wealth of information about the Bodleian Library and Oxford in general. He was kind, spoke in a pleasant tone that we all could hear well without shouting, and he was very respectful of the spaces we were in. We really enjoyed his tour. I highly recommend booking a tour with Dave.Visited July 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 28 September 2023

We were very lucky to have a small group so she was able to taylor some aspects but even without that it was fabulous . Christine was so knowledgeable, able to explain complex history into easy to understand bites and had a such interesting pieces of information that we loved . The buildings were amazing and awe inspiring. Highly recommendVisited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 2 October 2023
- Josephine H1 contributionGreat guide and a fairy-tale libraryOur enthusiastic guide Dan made the tour even better than we could have hoped (questions about maths aside). We enjoyed the wit, visual humour (we will remember John Wycliffe forever) and historical facts, including those about Harry Potter. An absolute must-see experience in Oxford!Visited October 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 4 October 2023
- 혜선 심1 contributionYou have to try this or you'll regret it❗️The tour was absolutely fantastic👏Not only was it very helpful in understanding the history of Bodleian Library but our guide, Dan was really humorous so it wasn't a bit boring! He seemed very passionate about this tour. The stories he told us were funny and it kept us laughing the whole time hehe Thank you Dan😊 We were so lucky to have you as a guide! I feel unfortunate giving this tour only 5 stars. I'd give it 10 if I could. I definitely recommend it for you!! It was definitely worth it even though it took us 15 hours to get here (We came from South Korea).Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 6 October 2023
- Ruth J16 contributionsGreat tour!I took the 30 minute guided tour with Jess. I would've liked to have taken the 60 minute tour to see more of the libraries, but they were all booked up several weeks in advance. Nevertheless, the 30 minute tour did not disappoint. Jess was a very passionate, engaging, and knowledgeable representative of the libraries.Visited September 2023Travelled soloWritten 8 October 2023

We arrived at the Bodleian hoping for a tour and were faced with a long queue of people around the block waiting for tickets. So if you can, it is far better to book online in advance to avoid the queues, and also the possibility that the tour you would like is sold out. We were lucky that 2 tickets had been returned, so we paid our £9 each for a 60 minute tour later in the afternoon. Bags aren’t allowed on tour, but there is a padlocked chest to store them in and the tour guide keeps the key. The 90 minute tour was marvellous and covered the 15th-century Divinity School, Convocation House, Chancellor's Court and Duke Humfrey's Library. You can take photos throughout the tour apart from the ancient Duke Humphrey’s Library. The librarian who conducted our tour was excellent – very informative, but also very funny and entertaining. You will learn the history of the library, the modern day running of the Bodleian, some university stories and the use of the buildings in films and TV. It was a great hour and one of our highlights of our trip to Oxford.

The majority of the grounds are free to enter. You will see historic classroom entrances with Latin inscriptions. The guided tours were sold out by 1pm on a Saturday so we just saw the inside of the Bodleian which was £2 for entrance and features in the Harry Potter films

It almost goes without saying that you are going to see beautiful buildings, quadrangles and sculptures. We didn't plan well enough to be able to join a guided tour - all booked up! But I wanted to recommend the audio guide as a very worthwhile alternative if you haven't set your heart on seeing the innards and workings of the library but want to admire the historic architecture. The audio guide was very easy to use, being the size of a small mobile phone that you held up to your ear to listen to - no fiddly earpieces. You would hear a description of your current location and then be directed to a new area of the library where you would point the device at a placard and it would spring back to life and recite the information relevant to your new position. It worked very well, provided an interesting and enjoyable commentary on the library, Radcliffe Square and the various quadrangles as well as many of the historic characters associated with the library and university. It does NOT allow access to the library buildings, but does guide you into the Divinity School which is very impressive in its own right (see photo). At £4.50 for a good 45 minutes of strolling round the library, I thought it was excellent value for money as well.

The tour is very limited now due to covid and may be unavailable when students return in late September.
Saying that I booked easily online (I think you have to pre book but the gate staff looked like they were still coaxing people in) and showed it on my phone at the gate. The quad is fabulous and has all the doors labelled in Latin you walk round to the Divinity School which has just the most beautiful interior plus some good info boards.
I'd recommend going in the next 2 weeks if you can as its quiet and you should get great photos almost impossible when the tourist hoards are in Oxford.

My wife and I called into the Bodleian on a Monday afternoon. Not having reserved a place on a tour we arrived to find that all the tours were sold out for the afternoon. We were however able to pay £2 each to see the Divinity School which is worth a visit to see the room where Harry Potter and Morse filming took place. Reading the timeline and historical notes and taking a couple of photos takes no more than a quarter of an hour. We then went on to see the Weston Library which houses a cafe on the ground floor. Our advice would be to book a tour if you have the time but if you haven’t it is still worth calling in for a short visit.

As someone who loves libraries and books, I got tickets ahead to see this library. We took an hour tour on a Sunday which allowed us into the actual library (if you really want to see the books, make sure that is open).
The docent was good but a bit rambling on with personal opinions. It was great to learn about the history and some of the major benefactors involved. We loved the architecture as well.
One unexpected thing: mid-way through the tour, we had to go back to the entrance foyer to leave our purses and napsacks in a large bin that is locked during the tour of the actual library. However, I kept my iPhone and wallet on me.
The one hour tour was good but not enough for an in-depth lecture. Time flew by and we only saw a few spaces.

I’ve been studying in Oxford for two years and conveniently waited for my mum to visit before doing the touristy stuff. Booked a walking tour as the library ones were fully booked and was not disappointed (we were literally the only ones on the tour so had a bargain private guide). Went to parts of the old town I never knew existed and the guide truly brought them to life with informed and witty narrative. 10/10.

For most people the exhibition would be what you want to see and that does not involve the rigmarole of getting a visitor pass to the main part of the library. Interesting displays.
I entered as a visitor so not able to borrow books but was allowed into the library as well as to the free exhibition. Thousands of books in the library, paintings hung on the walls continued the theme of the exhibition (important women - can't remember what they called it). Tea room where you could sit undisturbed. However most visitors will not go into the main library.

Myself and my partner both thoroughly enjoyed our city and university walking tour provided by Bodleian Library. Our tour guide Jane was not only friendly and approachable but also incredibly knowledgable. This meant she was was able to take us on an immersive journey around some of the most famous parts of Oxford City as well as introduce us to some hidden gems off the beaten track. I would highly recommend anyone visiting Oxford to book a tour with the Bodleian Library.

Does anyone have any idea what time of day the online tickets are added to the website? I’m checking for a month ahead, but no availability as yet (before 9am). Just wondering what time of day they are added. Thank you.

It looks as if only children age 11 and above can visit, is that correct?
Written 18 February 2024
I've used the Bodleian as a reader, but the website offers this information:
Children are very welcome, but please make sure they are supervised at all times.
Pushchairs and buggies are welcome in the galleries. At very busy times we may need to limit the number of buggies in the gallery, and this will be at the discretion of the room attendant. Please note that very large double-buggies cannot be brought into the exhibition galleries, due to the narrow walkways between exhibits.

hello! I will be visiting with my husband the Bodleian Libraries on Sunday 7th of May and we cannot find any available slot. Is it possible to find tickets when I get there? Or should I be checking constantly the website for any availability?

I would like to know how to get a tour of the Bodleian Library. The commercial tours on TripAdvisor stop only for a few minutes. Does the Library itself have tours? We will be in Oxford the week of July 3rd. Thank you!

Please Google Bodleian library Anand you will be able to find their website to book tickets online . Please note even if you do not find tickets online you might still get tickets at the door.

Are the tours refundable? And what's the difference between the city tour and the 90 min libray tour?
Written 27 February 2022
I'm sorry I don't know if the tours are refundable. However, the city tour is wide and much longer (hop on and off though). The Library tour is much more compact and covers the (outside) of the Bodleian, the Ratcliffe Camera and the Sheldonian. It is interesting. I had no idea that Christopher Wren was the youngest professor at Oxford (when he was 30). This is a walking tour.

The library website says tickets may be purchased up to 2 weeks in advance, however the date we are coming (Aug 2nd) is not showing ticket availability for any tours. Should I continue to check daily?
Written 20 July 2019
I daresay they are sold out, but...the same happaned to my son and ... no availability on line.
Soon after he arrived in town (around 11:00), he went there, he lined and he managed to get the ticket for a short tour in the afternoon.
Apart on line tickets they had some extra availability, june 2019.

Does anyone know whether same-day tickets can be bought at the Gate if the online tours are sold out (aka do they keep some back for same day purchase or not)?

Hello
Yes, we do retain some tickets for sale at the ticket office on the day on a first-come-first-served basis. However, please note that sometimes rooms are closed to the public due to events, and for that reason we cannot guarantee the availability of any particular tour in advance.
