78 Derngate is the only house in England designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

It is now a multi award-winning visitor attraction offering an unforgettable day out in Northampton.

Designed and remodelled by Charles Rennie Mackintosh in 1916, the house has been meticulously restored and opened to the public. On site: a boutique restaurant, light-filled art galleries, a stylish design shop and elegant spaces that can be hired for meetings, events and functions.

78 Derngate was the architect's final major commission; his visionary patron, Northampton model engineer, W.J Bassett-Lowke. It is the only place in the world where Mackintosh's mature architectural and interior style can be seen in their original setting. As such, the house has drawn many thousands of visitors from around the globe. Now you can follow in their footsteps and see this unique work from one of Britain's most influential and celebrated designers.

What a stroke of luck! Saw a leaflet and booked a free tour which was with two other older guys who also knew the name Bassett Lowke - of model railways and ships fame. But it was the Charles Rennie MacKintosh interiors we had come to see - an all round exquisite highly photographic experience. Worth a second visit (free... More

I am so pleased I spotted this on Trip Advisor. We were in the area and I just checked to see if there was anything unmissable and spotted this. Wow! I love the place. It is well worth doing the tour because you find out so much more when the guide explains things. It's a superb house that is really... More

Really interesting place to visit - fascinating history and the food in the cafe was wonderful too. Since I enjoyed the cafe so much, I returned a week later with my family

I loved the tour of the CRM designed house, the only one outside Scotland (in the UK). The tour lasts approx one hour and fifteen minutes and our guide was extremely knowledgeable. Anyone who is interested in design will similarly enjoy the experience. CRM was an innovative designer and some of the fine detail just has to be seen. The... More

I visited with my parents a few weeks ago and they both really enjoyed the tour, as did I. The guide was well informed and could answer any questions asked. Afterwards, we went into the cafe within the building. I was particularly impressed by the availability of (two!) vegan options- they were delicious cakes too. Would recommend.

In all the years I have lived in Northampton I never realised this place was here. I was looking for something unusual for a 30th gift. My friend told me about the gift shop. Some lovely individually designed pieces of art, jewellery and glassware amongst other CR Mackintosh souvenirs. I will return to look around the house which I believe... More

This house owned by WJ Bassett-Lowke and designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh and what a fabulous place it is. You can wander around on your own, but it is much better to join a tour and get the story of what you are seeing. The renovation has been done to a very high standard. You are allowed to take photos... More

Thanks to all concerned. A wonderful and informative afternoon spent at 78 Derngate. Friendly and helpful staff, well informed and genuinely interested guide followed by a thoroughly tasty (and well priced) cream tea. Fantastic way to while away a rainy Sunday afternoon.

Great couple of hours spent looking around this fantastic renovation. A design marvel and so forward thinking for its time. Guided tour a must. Very informative and the time just flew by. Learnt so much about local history as well . The staff were so friendly and helpful and although small the restaurant is well worth a stop , does... More

We were fortunate to arrive at tour time and don't usually do tours! However, in this case we felt we gained so much and would have missed many of the interesting points without it.The house and garden are wonderful. The staff were very friendly and the cafe was well worth a visit.
