Overview
More
Built in 1490, The Red Tower has stood firm along the walls for centuries, and has seen a recent overall and renovation into a functioning Community Interest Company. The ground floor has been been converted into a community cafe with hot and cold drinks, cakes and biscuits and a restroom. The upstairs has also seen a renovation to become an open and functioning space for charities, community groups and businesses. The ethos of the Red Tower is ultimately to become an inclusive, welcoming space for creative, learning and social activities, run by local people, encouraging local and wider community participation.

Restoration of the Red Tower continues but doesn't hamper visiting it. During my recent visit there were a group of Re-enactors demonstrating how to load a cannon - greatly enjoyed by young and old visitors alike!

Unlike other Towers along York City Walls, the Red Tower is built of brick not stone - hence it is "Red". Thanks to the Friends of York Walls, the Red Tower is now being opened to the public so check their website for opening hours....More
