Overview
More
York Theatre Royal has been producing great drama in the beautiful city of York for over 250 years and is one of the country's leading producing theatres. Each year the theatre entertains over 200,000 people with its wide variety of performances, events and activities including the much loved annual pantomime starring Berwick Kaler, the UK's longest-running Dame. Over the last ten years York Theatre Royal's work has expanded to include collaborations with the wider community and school groups both on and off stage. The theatre has seen an increase in the number of young people wanting to get involved and as a result they now have one of the largest youth theatre groups in the country with over 300 members. In recent years, the theatre has had huge success in terms of number of attendees and various awards recognising their work for The Railway Children hosted at the National Railway Museum and then transferred to the old Eurostar terminal at Waterloo, and the large scale production of the York Mystery Plays 2012 involving over 1,000 members of the community. The theatre reopened Friday 22 April following a £6million redevelopment, with a new roof, an extended and re-modelled front of house area, a refurbished and redecorated main auditorium and with major improvements to access and environmental impact. York Theatre Royal is now a building fit for a 21st century audience that will be sustainable and able to thrive into the future.

We loved the Railway Children! The only problem was the seating. The leg room was really totally inadequate if you were over 5'5", and led to "jiffling" to try to get legs in a comfortable position, which impacted on the person on the seat below...More

The production of the Railway Children is great in an appropriate setting - but the seating is fit for children not adults. Ridiculous leg room!

What a brilliant production. A tremendous night out. Would really recommend it. Just one thing - the seats are terrible with absolutely no leg room if you are over 5ft 6in tall. If the new theatre doesn't have more room than this it will be...More

Inventively staged at the National Railway Museum this production mesmerised and entertained from the very start. The production, the direction and the players were all of a standard rarely found outside of London... The story was told with great aplomb and wit and I take...More

Absolutely brilliant. Perks was very funny. Absolutely loved the show and would highly recommend for children and adults alike. The theatre is like a big tent from the outside and I was a little concerned we might find it cold but it was far from...More

This production by the Signal Box Theatre at the National Railway Museum telling the story of George Hudson was amateurish, tedious and low on content. Save your money and don't go. I feel ripped off having paid £20 for over 3 hours of poor quality...More
