The City Wall was built to protect York; it is split into sections and does not go all the way round the city. We had a lovely walk on a sunny day with some really good views of York Minster and many more interesting and...More

The walls do not completely surround the city so in places you return to pavement level and have to find where they continue without any signposts to help. The main wall has the most interesting views and exhibitions. Having visited Chester walls these were disappointing.

The city walls was brilliant, it doesn’t cost to go and walk it which is good as most things in York you have to pay for. We done the walk round the whole city, you can see the whole city from one height and it’s...More

Taking a walk around the city walls is a great way to spend a couple of hours on a sunny autumn day. The best free tour of the city!

We had great sunny weather so it was a real treat to wander along the walls. It's such a shame that you can't walk round a full circle though. Well worth doing!

We walked all the way and it was great to avoid the traffic and busy centre. No dogs are allowed on the city walls which may not suit everyone but was fine by us. The views across the city rooftops are lovely and the walk...More

Love the walls and always make a point of walking around them every time we come to York. It's such a wonderful way to see the city and all of its historical changes throughout the years. Amazing to have it still standing after all of...More

We had a great morning walking the York City Walls. The weather was bright and sunny and the views from the walls are great. It gives you a totally different perspective on York up there. We visit York regularly as we live nearby but we...More

The Wife and I began walking the walls a year ago. This was our 2nd York walls walk. We have now covered two thirds of the total wall walk leaving a third to do on our next visit. Maintenance of the walled walk is very...More

Always a pleasant view, nice to walk in sections or as a whole. Some parts near the Minster are more crowded as most people will just walk one section.

Wandering around the city walls was an excellent way to see the history of York, combined with its current city. There are tours you can join, or you can wander solo as I did – there are information points at the gates, and at pertinent...More

In the autumn the council does not prioritise sweeping leaves from the pathways and steps It is slippery and dangerous as a result A shame because there are fine views of the city from the wall in one of the few free York attractions

Dogs are not allowed on the City Walls, except for assistance dogs, according to the City of York Council. The walls are very narrow in spots, so I can see that dogs would make them even more difficult to navigate.

I wouldn’t recommend it as some parts of the wall end in steps and aren’t very wide. Other parts have no railing and a steep drop to the exposed side too.
