Discover Henry VII

Henry VII was the first Tudor King of England who ruled for twenty-four years after defeating Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth. His early reign was made unstable by Yorkist rebellion and pretenders to the throne but he established one of the most celebrated royal dynasties of the middle-ages and passed his crown to his son Henry VIII.

Find out about his early life as an exile Lancastrian heir to the throne, see the impact on the city of York as it continued to prosper throughout his reign and enjoy interactive experiences exploring life and death in Tudor times.

Children can get involved in our special Tudor camp featuring the gruesome bits Henry's history provided by 'Horrible Histories' author, Terry Deary.

Find out more about Henry's life and reign by following his timeline.

Explore one of the major gateways to the city - Micklegate Bar

Micklegate Bar has served as the main gateway to the city and the route through which serving monarchs have entered York for almost 1,000 years. It has also been the place at which the heads of traitors have been displayed and where condemned prisoners spent their final days on the way to the gallows.

Experience the 15th and 16th century city of York

Henry VII first came to York in 1486, where the civic authorities welcomed him with magnificent pageantry.York's importance as a trading centre had grown in the medieval period, and although York's status as England's second city was being challenged at the time of Henry's first visit, its many craftsmen guilds continued to prosper throughout his reign.

Lovely little museum in the Micklegate bar. It tells Henry VII's story in a way that is accessible to adults and children alike. We had a wonderful overview before we headed upstairs. I would thoroughly recommend.

The displays are well done, the place is clean and warm even on a very cold wet January day. However: some agility is required to negotiate the stairs, and the display organisation is a bit jumbled- hard to follow in time sequence.

Found this while walking the walls... cheap to enter, small place on 3 floors and youngsters encouraged to try everything out and on! Staff very knowledgeable and friendly, so set the scene before you go upstairs. We carried pushchair up stairs and they stored it no problem

Interesting but smal museum. Start at the top and work down. Kids can try on outfits which they enjoy. If you struggle with ladders /steep stairs this is not for you. Very difficult to get down if you have a fear of heights or mobility issue.

We bought a pass for this museum, Barley House and Richard III for £8 which was great value. The staff were very friendly and gave us a talk before we looked round. It's only a small museum but there is a lot to look at. The top level has lots of things for children to do. We went as a... More

As someone who was brought up in York I never realised that there was such a good quality museum in Micklegate. Staff were friendly as we arrived as a uni group, there was lots of amazing artefacts and information. Gift shop looked decent and there was plenty for children to do.

M and I rushed round the Richard III Museum with some family almost a year ago and decided after 'we must go back and read everything properly'. So this week we did, and visited both the Richard III Museum at Monk Bar and the Henry VII Museum at Micklegate Bar. We bought the 'Medieval Pass' for £8 each, which has... More

As per the other experience, worth going when making a trip around the wall of York. It will take up about 30 mins of your time and would not really appeal to young children. More board reading than anything else. Would only go again if bringing someone new to York.

Because that's all about. It is the average museum with text in the walls which tells how Henry became King mainly. The good part is that it is connected to the wall and close to the river and the train museum.
