This is one of the four main Bars into the City, and has its own history which you can read from the display boards. It is the northern gateway into the City and is very near to York Minster.

This is a great historical gate, showing entry into old York. The plaque on the gate states that this former Roman border wall of York was cut through to fit Princess Margaret's carriage (Henry VIII's sister). Enjoy!

Marking one of the original entries into the City initially created by the Romans, the majority of the present structure relates to the 14th century, although the main archway dates back to the 11th century. Today the imposing building gives access to the maze of streets and, of course, the Minster. Not a must see, but well worth a few... More

If travelling to York from Clifton (on the road rather than by the river) then this is the first 'Bar' or Gateway to the wall which you'll encounter. Bootham Bar makes an excellent starting point either for a short or complete circuit of York's medieval wall as it's very close to York Minster. You'll need to climb a steep flight... More

In some important ways this is The entrance into York. It's the main gate. It still has the feel a Royal Gate as though there is a long flat drive way up to a castle. The race course is without the city walls running along side of the "drive" that goes up the Bootham Bar. In a way, you could... More

Bootham Bar is on the site of one of the four main entrances to the Roman fortress. A gateway here for nearly 2000 years. Evidence tells us it was a toll gate 1280. This Gate to York's City walls looks out North-West toward the road called Bootham. Additionally as it is very close to York Minster.

Bootham Bar is one of the four main ancient entry points into the city. It has parts dating back to the 11th century and the original portcullis is still visible inside. It is the only gate to span a former Roman Road (High Petergate) which was the main east - west access across the city. It is the closest gate... More

This is a beautiful monument to pass through when walking the walls but it is basically just an empty room - hardly worth mentioning!
