Part of the York City wall. While built between the fourteenth and nineteenth century, it also has some stonework from the eleventh century.

Lovely maintained walls and gatehouse. History information also well done. The problem is that this end of York, Bootham/Gillygate and Exibition Square is too congested with traffic, tourist buses spew fumes, and the pollution tends to trap in the gatehouse.
Plan your visit to a less busy time, stay on the walls away from roads if you can and keep asking why York seems so unbothered by the out of control pollution/congestion.

This gate is conveniently between York Minster and the art museum and near the Yorkshire Museum. It is worth seeing for historical interest, but it is also the way between places you will want to visit. The plaza in front of the art museum is the place to buy tickets and board the hop-on-hop-off bus tour. So there are many reasons to go there.

(BTW, in York gates are called “bars.” A “gate” is a street, based on the Nordic word for street. You will find many street names that end in “gate” therefore. In other parts of England, street names ending in “gate” came from the city gate they crossed.)

Really worth a short stop as you walk around the city . Well preserved section of the old city walls and this key gate ( bar) . Nice way to enter through and get a brilliant view of the minster just 2 mins walk away. Decent old style pub under the Bootham bar as well ( the fat badger).

.. which adds to the overall character of the city. Not a must-visit in its own right but worthy of note.

We visited Bootham Bar during our walk around the city walls of York, this gateway is the nearest to the Minster and the wall walk from here to Monk Bar gives some nice elevated views of the upper half of the cathedral. The impressive looking gateway dates back to a time when a city wall defended the city and these carefully guarded gateways controlled access to and from the city. It is possible to join the city wall walk here in the clockwise direction only, there be no walkable section of wall between here and Lendal Bridge over the river Ouse.

This is one of 6 of the original Gates or "Bars" to the old city of York. We were staying within a stones throw of this gate and walked through it many times to reach the nearby York Minister and the old city centre. We also started our lengthy tour of the city walls from this strategic point.

The three statues adourning the top of the Gate are a stone mason holding a model of the bar, 14th Century Mayor Nicholas Langton and a Knight carrying a sword and shield.

There are I believe six gateways ( bars ) into York ,Bootham Gate is without a shadow of a doubt one of the most historic.
This was one of the sites of were the original gateway into the Roman fortress of the city was located in 71AD, nearly 2000 years of history are in this area ,the present Bootham Bar dates from the 11th century with later repairs and alterations carried out in the 14th & 15th century to this imposing three storey tower and gateway .
During the Siege Of York in 1644 this gateway was damaged but was repaired later on.
If you descend down from the walls through Bootham Bar you can see the wonderful portcullis and imagine how formidable a defensive tower and gateway this was in the time ,best views in my opinion are from Exhibition Square,it's most definitely well worth checking out if you're in the area.

The bar was damaged during the siege of York in 1644. Like Micklegate Bar, it was sometimes used to display the heads of traitors. Bootham Bar was the last of the gates to lose its barbican, demolished in 1835. A portcullis which although no longer working is still housed in the tower which you can access and see. Bootham bar is topped by three statues; a stone mason holding a model of the bar, 14th Century Mayor Nicholas Langton and a Knight carrying a sword and shield. Monk bar and multangular tower can be reached from Bootham Bar.
