    Must see!
We loved both the museum and the St Mary Abbey ruins and gardens. The museum is full of fascinating artifacts and is a great introduction to the long history of York (and its many changes). The staff and wonderful and kind, and the museum has lots of interactive features and great explanatory texts with the artifacts.
Hi Emily! Thank you so much for this kind review! We are so glad you enjoyed your visit to the Yorkshire Museum and York Museum Gardens. We do hope you will be making the most of your annual ticket and be back to visit us another time!

Amazing bit of history throughout the ages
After viewing the Abbey ruins in the gardens on previous visits to York, we decided to venture inside for the first time. The gent that greeted us at the helpdesk/reception was incredibly knowledgeable. We both signed up for the yearly ticket fee. As it was really hot the day we went we decided to visit in 2 parts as the heat had worn us out. Went back the next day, gave our names & off we went for the 2nd part of the museum we'd missed the previous day. We were greeted the 2nd day as nicely as we were the 1st. Everyone seemed incredibly lovely & knowledgeable. Definitely recommend this for any age.
Hello! Thank you for your kind review. We are so glad you enjoyed the museum and already made use of the annual ticket. We are pleased to hear our staff made your visit so enjoyable, we hope to welcome you back again soon!

    Fascinating displays
Lots to look at. Wonderful collection of Roman artefacts and we enjoyed the Jurassic section. Unfortunately, our visit was marred by two mothers visiting with their group of unruly younger children who shouted at the top of their voices at every opportunity. It also included one of their brood running across the mosaic floor twice with his clumpy boots on while oblivious mothers were deep in their own conversation. No member of staff was present in the mosaic floor room at the time. Later on the cherubs were running rampant with the wooden daggers and swords in the gift shop while another had completely emptied the contents of items on display. Staff seemed oblivious to this despite the racket. We have three of our own children and can honestly say we have never been in any museum where young children have been allowed to behave so appallingly. The historic library is fascinating and we could happily have spent much longer browsing book titles. Great information about William Smith. Would have liked there to be more information on the Vikings rather than a small area downstairs. Good value for money if booked online.
Hi there, thank you for your comments, we are glad you enjoyed the museum itself. We hope you will make the most of your annual pass and return another time to enjoy the museum again. Weekdays during term time can often be quieter for any return visits!

    Interesting museum with amazing stories.
Popped in here to look at the Jurassic exhibition and ended up touring the whole space. Interesting exhibits laid out in a friendly and easy to understand manner. It’s a little pricey to get in as they offer a 12 month entrance fee, sadly as so far away from home it’s doubtful if we’d pop back, but great offer if you’re local.
Hello! Thank you for your comments, we are glad to hear you enjoyed the museum and found it interesting. If you do come back, do pop in and visit us again!

    Interesting museum
We booked our visit time online as we had a York city pass. We came quite early and were still let in which we were really happy about. The museum is really interesting as there are so many things to look at!
Hi there, We are glad you enjoyed your visit to us, we are generally very flexible on admission times even with York Passes! We are so glad you found it interesting, we hope you will be back again another time!

    Lovely museum
As the weather forecast was rain all day myself and my friend were looking for indoor activities for us and our 3 little boys age 7, 7 and 5. We decided on park and ride to York followed by the Yorkshire museum. The dinosaur exhibit looked like it would be really interesting for them from the website. We had brought coffee and packed lunches but there is no food or drink in the museum including no picnic area. Not a big problem although I had to down my coffee before going in. On a nice day we would have had a picnic in the beautiful gardens. The boys loved dressing up as Vikings and the older ones found the skeletons really interesting. My youngest was a bit freaked out by them. There are various interactive parts including a puzzle and a sensory tent. The boys had a lot of energy built up as we'd had a long drive and they really could have done with a good run around- difficult in a museum. We did our best to keep them entertained. They found the facts about the Groom of the Stool hilarious. The mosaic floor was beautiful and the boys tried on the Roman sandals and walked on the floor with their socks. After they put their shoes back on my eldest forgot and accidentally walked on the floor in his boots. I had a word with him and he felt really bad and had forgotten he had his shoes on. A woman gave me the most disgusting look at this point as I was apologising! Most people we spoke to during the visit were in the same boat with children who they were trying to keep busy and out of the rain, we had lots of lovely conversations with campers trying to keep out of the rain. It's a shame not everyone is so friendly and kind. After the visit we went to the gift shop where I emptied the box of rings onto the counter so that we could find the smallest one for my son. Sadly the ring broke shortly afterwards so it was lucky I had bought 2. My other little boy was playing with a soft sword and then opted to buy a dinosaur tail which he has worn proudly all week. The prices in the gift shop were reasonable so we were all happy with the purchases and had a lovely visit all in all.
Hi there, Thank you for your comments, we are pleased to hear you enjoyed your visit to the museum. We are glad you found the exhibits varied and interactive! Do make the most of your annual tickets and come back to visit us again as many times as you'd like for the next 12 months!

Great dinosaur exhibition with some amazing fossils, well displayed. Some very interesting and unique artefacts in all sections. Ticket entry allows you to return for free anytime within a year. Bedale hoard berry special.

    Lovely Staff!
My husband and I enjoyed our visit to the museum - there are some really fascinating pieces; most of which we didn't expect to find! The sapphire pendant (apparently the best of it's kind) was so lovely to see. Can more be done to showcase the offerings and bring people in? The collection was lovely, but the knowledgeable and enthusiastic staff really made the experience great for us! We learned a lot, and I was surprised to know they were not curators (or curators in the making). Could more be done to support the staff and develop their knowledge and enthusiasm further? They couldn't speak any higher of their employer, and they genuinely feel fortunate to work at the museum. Just an observation from me.. please keep those staff! Shining stars. And the support that I watched them give to older people (navigating the museum and the shop) was heartening.
Hi there, Thank you for this, we are glad that you enjoyed your visit to us and that our staff's enthusiasm made your visit special. We really appreciate your comments and whilst we do have some things in place, we will pass your feedback along. We hope you will make the most of your annual pass and come back to visit us again another time.

Lovely museum just needs a few more "must see" pieces to be truly excellent
Lovely mix of Viking, Roman and Medieval history with some dinosaurs thrown in for good measure! Very clean, well presented museum that is very child friendly. There's lots to read and do. Only criticism is the wooden dinosaur and some unruly kids who were overly enjoying themselves and causing havoc with the toys. The lady doing crafting/weaving is an asset to the team!

    Incredibly fascinating!
I visited the museum on Tuesday 20th. I found the reception staff were ever so polite and kind, explaining the museum layout to me in great detail, and then pointed me in the direction of the first exhibit, which was about the Roman history of York. I loved the rooms enormously, and enjoyed the placards explaining each item as well as the items themselves. On to the next room, which was about the medieval history of York, and again, this area was intriguing and a kind gallery attendee was eager and ready to ask any questions I may have had, which was a really highlight as all staff members seemed to be very passionate about their work (and the joy on their faces when talking about the museum was heart-warming). The final room was about the Jurassic times, dinosaurs and fossils, and as with the previous rooms, there was plenty of explanation about each item and it's importance to York. One thing I loved was the idea that your entry to the museum (which is cheaper to book online) is valid for a year, so you pay once and can go all year. This is a really good draw for the museum, but I'd pay to go again.

An interesting museum that probably focuses more on the history of York rather than Yorkshire.
Very informative displays with just about enough information to prevent "brain-full syndrome"

As museums go it wasn't that bad it's all about cost in todays climate if you book online you do save and can book a time slot too and if you keep your ticket you can return 365 times less Mondays as it's closed. The big question is would I return YES!
