The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Southbank
Big time attractions such as the London Eye and a thriving theatre scene (compliments of the National Theatre and the Young Vic) are but a few of the reasons that Southbank is such a collectively cherished part of town. With plenty of family friendly activities and venues lined up along a pedestrianized river bank between Westminster Bridge and Waterloo Bridge, visitors can always expect a casual and festive atmosphere. On top of all the fun stuff to do at Southbank is the opportunity to simply sit back and admire photo-op views of iconic landmarks like Parliament and St Paul's Cathedral, just on across the Thames.

Staff service here is terrible. Hence my rating. I ordered a coffee and a bap to have in. It was 9am on a Saturday morning, with no other customers at all either waiting to be served or sitting down. I enquired whether the bap would be bought to me, expecting to take a seat with my coffee. One of the 2 serving staff exclaimed ' it will only take a few minutes', implying that I was to wait at the counter which I did. I waited at the counter, without complaint for a few minutes whilst my bap was heated . During this time, the member of staff who told me effectively stand and wait (I sipped my coffee at the Counter) went out for a CIGARETTE BREAK!!. By comparison, I went to an independent coffee shop in Brick Lane a few days ago. Again no one in the cafe, but the staff member serving told me to take a seat and brought the coffee over to me. This is customer service. So disappointed with the service at Caffe Nero, having been for years a long standing customer. I found the staff attitude quite rude. I will never return as a customer to Caffe Nero. I think it is only right to warn others.

Had heard and read there would be holiday crafts available and many unique galleries at OXO and Gabriel’s Wharf. Aside from the lovely but small skylark artist cooperative and a few jewelry stores at OXO and 2 small knit wear boutiques at the wharf, all others were either chain stores and cafes or closed your empty. Worth a walk through if on your way to somewhere else, but do not make it a destination.( Tuesday early afternoon visit)

I took some friends on a tour of free places to get great views of London. Oxo Tower has a terrace with a little bit sectioned off for the public to enter for free. You can go anytime and the views are great. We went on Boxing day when most of London (not Oxford Street!) felt deserted and it was like we had the whole place to ourselves.

My wife and used this restaurant for my wife's 60th birthday treat and we were not disappointed, from entering to leaving the restaurant some 2 hours and whole experience was first class throughout namely the staff, service, and food highly recommended for another visit.
We also had a table overlooking the Thames on one of the hottest days of the year.

The Bargehouse dates back to around 1900 when a power station was built on the Oxo Tower Wharf (then known as Stamford Wharf) to supply electricity to the Post Office, which operated until the late 1920’s when the buildings were bought by the Liebig Extract of Meat Company who redeveloped the riverside building with the famous Oxo Tower. With changes in delivery and processing methods, they in turn vacated the buildings and they became derelict in the 1970’s, until acquired by the Coin Street Community Builders and the riverside Oxo Tower building was refurbished was refurbished with restaurants, residential flats and studio and gallery spaces. The Bargehouse remains as a decaying edgy series of spaces, much loved as a unique venue for art and design exhibitions and providing a variety of spaces in different states of decoration and disrepair.

At the time of visiting, there was a pop-up exhibition “Exhibit Here Art Maze”. “Exhibit Here” ia an online art gallery and curator of art exhibitions for artists to show and sell their work and to provide a venue for networking. At Bargehouse, over 100 artists were showing a wide variety of painting, photography, graphics, sculpture and installations to create an “art maze” in this unique environment.

Hurry hurry this exciting exhibition will not be on for long. A very talented artist called James Willis presents water colour and oil paintings of many familiar sites and sounds of London.

The Oxo Wharf Tower is on the Southbank walk, by Gabriel's Wharf. Between Waterloo and Blackfriars bridge. Walk through the side streets to get into the tower and go up the lift to 8th floor. Ask at the restaurant for access to thePublic Viewing Gallery. Wonderful views over London. Lots of fancy shops on floors 1 and 2. Check the surrounding streets for more of London. Not far from Borough Market, nr London Bridge, for delicious eats from market stalls

Food is average but I didn't cook it so it was fab! The wine was pricy but worth it.The service is fantastic and attentive without being pushy. It was great to sit outside with such an incredible view. All in all a great experience and we will be back! Thank you.

We had a lovely stroll from the OXO tower towards the city on the south bank of the Thames.
While the views on the opposite bank were lovely, the stroll itself was somehow lacking.

Whilst on our river cruise and also hop on hop off bus, we saw this building on the south bank of the Thames and interestingly learnt how it came about.
