Address
Neighbourhood: City of London
From its ancient past as a Roman trading outpost to its 21st century status as the wealthiest square mile in the world, the financial district known simply as “The City” is one of London's most historic and fascinating neighbourhoods. Here high rise office towers such as Norman Foster’s Gherkin mingle with Roman ruins and architectural marvels from virtually every era in between, including Christopher Wren's glorious St.Paul's Cathedral, and John Soane's dauntingly classicist Bank of England. This neighbourhood is also home to some of the finest restaurants and plushest hotels in Europe, in addition to an assortment of of watering holes, upscale shops, and Tube stations. During the week, the City is abuzz with white collar workers going about their business; the weekend sees this area turn into a quiet haven for sightseers.

Love this beautiful art deco pub that was a former friary and has been around since 1873. The wedge-shaped building is gorgeous inside, with mosaics, reliefs, and art glass, and the pub has interesting history. It also has great food (loved the halloumi cheese fries and the chicken/mushroom pie), good beer and whiskey selections, and friendly staff and clientele. In good weather, there's also outside seating...but then you miss all the beauty inside! If you want to have dinner here, best to make a reservation. This was my second time at this pub; I brought my husband and 22-year-old son here for our first pub dinner in London on a recent trip, and they loved it, too!

Great old london pub. The look of this pub just amazes me, it's just super cool and steeped I history. Drinks are decently priced and they accept cash. The pub is handy for buses or the tube, would visit again.

Walked by and stopped in early Sunday afternoon for a half pint on our own pub tour. We had been here several years ago on a scheduled pub tour and it was so busy that you could not even order a pint. It was much more enjoyable this time when it was not crowded. The people here were very nice and gave us samples to make sure we liked what we were ordering. Great pub to check out when in London.

This curiously wedge-shaped pub with a jolly friar over the front door, is well worth a visit for a drink or for lunch. It’s highly decorated outside, but inside, it’s an Arts & Crafts wonder, with copper relief friezes of jolly friars, and lots of beautiful marble. There’s a kind of vaulted snug tucked under the railway bridge, where every inch of wall and ceiling is decorated.

We had the beef in ale pie and the fish and chips, which were both good, although we would have tried a sandwich, but the kitchen wasn’t serving those at the time. We tried the Nicholson’s pale ale, which we enjoyed.

Friendly staff, and lovely surroundings. A little gem of a pub.

We have often popped into The Black Friar as a last stop before the train home. The interior of this pub never ceases to amaze me, especially the fact that in the 1970’s it was slated for demolition as part of a road widening scheme!

We popped in most recently early evening on a Monday and had some bar snacks along with a couple of pints of the excellent Titanic Plum Porter and mulled cider.

The bar staff were friendly and helpful and it wasn’t particular busy, although a regular trade was coming through.

Still a must visit for me on the decor alone, the excellent real ale comes a close second though.

This is a not-to-be-missed old gem of a London pub with amazing architecture and unique decor, good beer, mulled spiced cider (for Christmas), friendly and efficient staff, (didn’t have time for food, but it looked and smelled nice).

We hunted this one out as we’d had a recommendation and we loved it. It’s small and somewhat crowded but the atmosphere is lovely and the interior is fascinating. It’s part of the Nicholson’s chain, which acquires old buildings of character, and offers standard but tasty food. The staff here is friendly and efficient. We didn’t eat but the food passing by our table looked superb (maybe on our next visit)! There is a wide selection of ales and beer so a pleasant hour or so can assured. Clean toilets with high-end toiletries add to the overall positive impression. Definitely one to look out for if you like history & authenticity, and a friendly vibe.

My second trip to London and the only place that I wanted to stop at for a drink and some food was the Black Friar. The ambiance is great and the wood paneled wall carvings are beautiful. We had a pint and Fish and Chips...perfect.
If I ever return to London, I'll be back to Black Friar!!
