About
In a single street in London, separated by a wall, are the homes of two of history's most significant musical artists. 25 Brook Street is the house that belonged to George Frideric Handel and the place where he composed some of the world's most enduring baroque music, including Messiah. On the top floor of 23 Brook Street is the flat where, two centuries later, Jimi Hendrix lived with his girlfriend, record player and guitar. Both were the homes of musical innovators who chose London and changed music. See them together under one roof at Handel & Hendrix in London.

Set beside some of London's best parks and home to world-class galleries, luxurious hotels, and famed thoroughfares, the ultra upscale Mayfair is one of London's most exclusive haunts. Here the shopping is haute, the dining is exquisite, and the nightlife is vibrant. A casual stroll through the area’s chic streets will reveal that Michelin stars and chauffeured cars are practically the norm here. Even if you're on a tight budget, this exceptionally well connected swath of Central London is worth exploring, if only for the chance to take a peak at the goings on of upper crust English society.

This was more Handel than Hendrix but only just. "Popular Music" has existed for years with much the same purpose, be it Handel, Hendrix or a Boosey Ballad.
Patricia Hammond & Matt Redmond gave an superb hours demonstration of this with songs from the early C18th to late C19th, many of which have lasted until today.
This is somewhere you should visit, with or without live music.

Try to co-ordinate your Handel Museum visit with a concert, if you can. The immersive experience of listening to Handel and his contemporaries' music in Handel's rooms is not to be missed. Historically-informed performances in intimate domestic spaces, with in the case of our visit,, an attentive audience of less than 20, must be the optimum way to listen to the solo and chamber music of our Hero's period.
Our concert, organised by the British Harpsichord Society and excellently played by Medea Bindewald, allowed us a very detailed listen to some Scarlatti sonatas, ending with the Soler Fandango to send us on our way with our metaphorical castanets clicking.

It's not every day you get to stand in the room that masterpieces like Handel's Messiah were composed. As a baroque music fan and history lover, Handel & Hendrix was a must-stop on my trip to London, and it didn't disappoint. The guides were knowledgeable and enthusiastic, and I had a delightful time geeking out with them over the magnificent life of one of the world's most gifted musicians.
Upstairs, you can take a trip back to '60s London in the Hendrix flat. The fact that these two musical geniuses shared (nearly) the same living space, 300 years apart, is very cool -- there's even some great quotes about how Hendrix first started listening to Handel when he moved in, and how it effected his songwriting.
Highly recommend!

My teenage son and I, had this visit planned months ago, after he’d finished his G.C.S.E’s;.
We both love history and music and in particular “rock” music; and being a good young guitarist in his own right, my son became an avid lover of Hendrix’s works and the unique techniques he developed.
Well, we weren’t disappointed; and in the 2 1/2 hours in there, had a great time looking around at the memorabilia of Handel and Hendrix; and speaking with staff.
One member of staff, Karin, was particularly interesting to talk to; and sat us down and explained about the life of times of Handel; and shared her knowledge about his reputation, provenance and friendships, which added great warmth, colour and atmosphere the visit.
In all, it was a wonderful visit and good value for money; and so if your keen on music and nostalgia, I’d recommend anyone to go.

Although it is about to close for a lengthy period of refurbishment, this is one of my favourite London museums. Housed in a tall townhouse a stone's throw from plushy Bond Street, it was where Handel lived until his death. And, around 200 years later, Jimi Hendrix rented a pad on the top floor for a year in the mid 1960s. Your ticket allows you to visit both apartments: they have each been furnished in a style appropriate to the times of each musician and display cases show you memorabilia, with informative panels to tell you more. I spent over 2 hours there and genuinely learnt a lot. It will be interesting to see how it changes as a result of the refurbishments.

This place had been on my bucket list for a very long time so I’m chuffed to have ticked it off. Although a lot of what is left here isn’t original I.e. the decor and most instruments etc, being in the ex stomping grounds of these legends felt amazing. There was an energy in that building that left me feeling inspired. It made me imagine what it would have been like to live in their respective eras. Also the stories told by the guides brought about a nostalgic feeling. I’d definitely recommend visiting here

The house is located at 25 Brook Street, just off New Bond Street, and costs 14 pounds to enter. You see a recreation of the house occupied by Handel during his life in London which has been furnished in the style of Handel´s lifetime (only a couple of pieces belonged to him). There is lots of information about Handel and his work, and the room guides are very knowledgeable and willing to share that knowledge with the interested visitor. On the top floor you can cross to number 23, where Jimi Hendrix lived in a bed sit flat in the late ´60s. This is recreated from photos and a lot of effort has gone into presenting Hendrix´s life in London - to the extent of presenting details of his record collection - which I found fascinating! Well worth visiting.

The staff are so knowledgable and engaging that we ended up spending nearly two hours here. Their enthusiasm is infectious and adds so much to the visit. The Hendrix bedroom reminded me of countless student bed sits from the time. Great attention to detail. Same for the Handel house, where there are some beautiful items on display as well as interesting drawings and art work which help give a real impression of life at one end of early Georgian society.

Recently reopened after its revamp, this remarkable house reflects its two famous musical inhabitants. 200 years after George Frideric Handel lived there, the top floor flat became the London home of Jimi Hendrix. Both musicians have left their mark on the house. There is a free hand held electronic guide to use while you're in the museum, but the volunteer in the Handel bedroom was even better, she was a fount of knowledge on Handel and provided lots of background information. In fact all the staff were excellent and helped to make this a very enjoyable visit.

Handel is my second favourite British composer and Jim was decent on the guitar so thought we’d check this place out. Learned a lot and staff were nice. They do live music quite often and we saw some great performances. A good trip, maybe a few quid too pricey but memorable enough.

Hey I am thinking about visiting here but was wondering what the photo policy is? I'd love to get a photo of me in Hendrix's flat while I was there!
Thanks,
Matt

Hi Matt, it is absolutely fine to take photos. I sat on Hendrix’s bed and took a selfie and it was no problem. Just respect the heritage and have fun.
