A very dirty, tackey and rundown part of London. Why would you want to come here.

Vibrant place if you look beyond the London traffic fumes and dirt. Fascinating history and character. I particularly recommend the Bethnal Green WW2 disaster memorial in 'Barmy' Park next door to the Roman Road entrance of the tube station, opposite St.John on the green church. www.stairwaytoheavenmemorial.org

Not sure why Bethnal Green would be considered an attraction! I've lived here before and there really isn't much here.

Some might consider this area of London to be a bit less touristy and more authentic part of London. Bethnal Green is in the East London i.e. the traditionally poorer part. In truth there isn't much to see here, certainly nothing than an average tourist would want to see. Unless your shopping habits extend to cheap, mainly ethnic clothing or your eating habits mainly revolved around eating stereotypical British fry-ups, give this place a miss.

There are some "trendy" cafes especially in the area around the underground. The only remotely interesting thing about the shops are the traditional street stalls

Yes, at times it is a bit tacky and run down, but remember that "real" people live here and from our experience ,they are generally very nice and welcoming and eager to please. We also would not be hesitant to live here if we were Londoners. Also remember, that the Towers Hamlet council does not provide garbage or recycling bins and locals need to leave this detritus on the footpaths in ordinary plastic bags on collection days. We all know what happens then; like neighbourhood cats etc ripping the bags apart and things like this are not conducive to 'immaculate cleanliness".
Do not let this tag turn you off; go there and have a friendly drink in a pub or whatever and chat to the locals; I think that you will be surprised.

Bethnal Green is a bustling inner city area of London. East London as the locals fiercely correct me. They are a proud bunch, with an interesting local history that dulls many other areas of this great capital city. There is a good cosmopolitan mix of many nationalities that have settled here over the years and, coupled with the more recent artistic set, makes for a vibrant place to visit. There are many tea or coffee bars, a street market, a childrens museum, many, many shops that will cater for most needs and a large Royal Park (Victoria Park) that hosts many events throughout the year, including firework displays on, or around 5th November and music concerts in the summer. If you want to experience a slice of London, visit Bethnal Green.

74 years after the Bethnal Green tube disaster a memorial has been erected in the park by the tube station. It is a fitting tribute to those that lost their lives. All of the names of the dead are etched in the stairway. There is a plaque describing the events and small plaques with the memories of those who survived.Really worth a visit.

Bethnal Green some interesting roads of how Londons East End was like, old pubs and cafes where famous and infamous people went, The Krays, and Jack The Ripper. Pellecci cafe Bethnal Green Road used by the Kray brothers and in the film Legend about The Krays, Ezra Street and Columbia Street, Spitalfields Market and Ten Bells pub used by most of Jack the Rippers victims, and streets hardly changed from that time

My main aim for visiting Bethnal Green was to follow a family history trail to St Matthew's Church. What an amazing place Bethnal Green is! Go on a Friday for market day and it is very colourful - stalls selling beautiful fabrics and clothes, food etc. The shop window displays are equally colourful selling stunning gold jewellery and traditional sarees.

St Matthew's Church is an attractive 18th Century building and I was pleased to be able to get some good photos of the exterior. Pity that it was locked as I would have loved to have seen where ancestors married back in 1828!

Bethnal Green tube station is on the Central Line and gets you right into the middle of the suburb. The V&A Museum of Childhood is nearby, but I didn't have time to visit.
