I didn't even know this memorial existed by when walking through Hyde Park from Marble Arch recently I stumbled across it. A large panoramic format memorial with engraved stonework depicting animals in war (elephants, camel, horses, etc.) along with a couple of statues of mules or donkeys carrying war hardware. It really is a nice landmark.

On the central reservation in Park Lane, this £2 million memorial to all the different animals that died working with the armed forces down the centuries reflects something of the feelings of British people in the 21st Century.

I love statues and I can imagine children being very taken by these. You can wander around the monument and interact with the bronze beasts. Perhaps it elicits different emotions from most war memorials.

The Animals in War Memorial is situated between two carriageways along Park Lane. The memorial commemorates all the animals that died while serving under British military control throughout history. The endearing sculpture was designed by David Backhouse and unveiled by Anne, Princess Royal in 2004. The memorial is worth exploring even though it is slightly inaccessible, it is adjacent to Hyde Park and is a short walk from Marble Arch.

An Impressive Set of Sculptures in Mayfair

I had discovered the Animals in War Memorial several trips before, but on this September trip, we were basically just exploring Hyde Park, near our hotel, and took the time to look at this memorial a bit more.

While the main portion, featuring two pack mules basically entering a mountain pass, is the focus, I discovered several more statues, in the median between the lanes of Park Lane, and to the north of the main area.

While much can be seen, just crossing Park Lane at this point, pause, walk to the north, and explore those additional sculptures, as well. I would allow a good 30 minutes for this exploration.

Seen during our hop on hop off bus tour only and lies close to Hyde Park. It is a poignant reminder that some animals were heros too.

Really well done. It's a beautiful structure. It sits opposite Aston Martin on a traffic reservation.

We never really remember the animals used so extensively during wartime. This is a great memorial and worth a look.

The inscription says it all: ‘They had no choice’. What a wonderfully moving monument to the countless animals sacrificed in war to help humans slaughter each other. The bronze sculptures of the animals are beautifully made, showing their hard work but also how dejected they must have been. It’s in the central reservation on Park Lane, but there are traffic light controlled crossing points to it, though care is still needed. Definitely a ‘must see’ location if you’re in this part of London. Very, very emotional.
