Discovered this beautiful church during lunchtime explorations of the Farringdon area. Although signposted, it's 'hidden' in Ely Place. The downstairs room was full of diners on my first visit, so couldn't be entered. That treat came later. The church upstairs was open however and is...More

This restored Romanesque church has lovely stained glass depicting the martyrs. It was damaged in the war and rebuilt in the 1950s.

The ancient church is perfect for mass with accompanying music -- much as it was intended when the building was constructed several hundred years ago. Likewise the stained glass, carved wooden details, and stonework harken to its long and storied past.

Went on a weekday morning and felt really calmed by the hushed atmosphere. The entry to the sanctuary area is via quite an unusual route and the splendour of one of the largest stained glass windows suddenly hits.
