I have visited three times and the gallery is never busy- spacious and a relaxed atmosphere, no crowds or queues. But a shame if it is not better known - it deserves lots of visitors. Permanent collection of mostly 19th century paintings with occasional exhibitions....More

I called in to see the Roman amphitheatre while doing the self-guided 'roads to Rome' walk (see City of London website), I knew what to expect before getting there so there was no disappointment. It is ruined, reconstructed with some lights and info stands. Someone...More

This was a quick stop for us, I think we were only there 30 minutes, and spent most of that in the basement with the Roman ruins. There was no one there at 3:00 on a Thursday, so it was a pleasure not bumping into...More

This is a wonderful free place to visit in the City of London. On the ground and first floors is a wonderful art gallery, but in the basement the Roman amphitheatre is not to be missed. Free guided tours at certain times which are highly...More

I'm really glad you enjoyed the gallery and amphitheatre. Some say we have the best toilet facilities in London, but I've not been able to verify this!

I don't know much about art but enjoy seeing what is considered good (except modern stuff) so I go to art museums and enjoy seeing things I recognize. There's nothing here you will recognize, nor the artists' names. And I know there's much more than...More

As you can tell by the title, we stopped here to see the ruins of the Roman arena in the basement. While there's not much there, the archaeologist who was down there made it all come life with his talk. I'm not sure if he's...More

Visited primarly to see the outstanding collection of Victorian Art, but there's more besides including paintings which capture London's past and changing temporary exhibitions too. The bonus is the Roman Amphitheatre which was discovered when the gallery was rebuilt in the 1980s - the remains...More

We primarily visited here to find a painting listed in 1001 paintings you must see before you die: Leighton's The Music Lesson. We found that quickly but the rest of the gallery is a gem as well - I especially enjoyed seeing such a range...More
