Phoenix Cinema is one of the UK’s oldest purpose-built cinemas. Beneath the vaulted ceiling which dates back to 1910, the history of film has been shared with millions of audience members. From silent films with live music through two World Wars screening newsreels to digital projection today; the Phoenix has witnessed it all. Nowadays the Phoenix shows an interesting selection of European and arthouse films, and has a lively cafe offering drinks and homemade food.

Went to see On The Town with my elderly Mum, daughter and son today. Arrived early and enjoyed coffee and cakes. Thoroughly enjoyed the film and also the singalong. The guy that took the singalong was really good - thank you for singing Happy Birthday to my 26 year old. - she chose to go to the Phoenix today and... More

My husband and I love this cinema. It's for people who enjoy good, well-made films and is usually free of noisy popcorn crunchers. Our most recent trip was to a showing of I Am Not Your Negro, with a Q&A afterwards. Definitely recommend a trip here. We need to keep these small cinemas going.

The Phoenix cinema in East Finchley is a real pearl that opened in 1912 and is still functioning. Refurbished but still keeping the old time movie house atmosphere. I was there with my grandkids on a Saturday matinee with matinee prices, 3 pounds for a ticket. A proof that smaller neighborhood cinemas are still competitive. A very nice cafe and... More

It's the complete opposite to those awful, plastic, popcorn-stinking cinemas that are all around us. It's olde worlde and shows the best kind of films. However, although only half full and we're in mid-November, it wasn't half baking hot inside! Also, although I thought I could see loudspeakers along the side, the sound only came from the front, which was... More

My only objection has to do with the cafe. The coffee quality isn't that great, the taste is very burnt and overall not very nice. The children opted for cakes, whilst the carrot cake was pleasant, the red cupcake with a gummy bear on top was it really nice. I found the menu quite boring and not great choice in... More

Great bar and cafe with homemade snacks and cakes. Staff are delightful. Usually show top films and arthouse films in comfortable surroundings. The is architecturally notable and the cinema interior has gilded moulding from the originally art deco pieces from the now demolished Gaumont North Finchley. An even t to go here and membership actually offers good savings if you... More

If I was asked to describe a perfect cinema it would be a place that had films you didn't know that you wanted to see but could trust that they would be quality productions - and be glad you had seen them afterwards; staff that were friendly and helpful; a cosy cafe and seats that were comfortable and well positioned... Very friendly staff and a lovely little cafe. Saw Love and Friendship one afternoon, with not a lot of other customers!

Nice cinema with art deco features, but once in the bar, I bought 2 small glasses of wine on Saturday 14th May at 8;00pm for what I was told would cost me the sum of £9.00. The credit card reader screen showed £9.80 and when I queried this, I was told that the machine was not working properly, but I... More

Dear Soulla, thanks for your review. We're really glad you like the cinema, but concerned to hear of the issue you had at the bar. We've found your transaction and it lists two glasses of wine at the correct price. There is no combination of wines which would add up to £9.00 so it's not clear where the issue has... More
