Nice drink on the Thames

Nice drink on the Thames. Very clean pub and nice friendly staff. The pub also has a rooftop terrace as well to where you can have a drink over looking the Thame.

This was actually our second visit to The Anchor, and both times we have been really impressed with the quality of the food and the atmosphere. We have sat both on the roof terrace and in a booth in the main pub near the bar and had a great experience in each. We ordered the Toad in a Hole and... More

I'm a very picky eater so I had a lot of trouble finding places to eat whilst in London. I really wanted to try a "typical pub" while here but was having trouble finding food I'd eat so I was delighted to find that this pub offered "veggie fish and chips" that would kinda give me the feel of it... Very cool looking place along the river. Stopped in for a couple beers and some fish and chips. Interesting old looking building with all kinds of bars and levels. It's grab a seat when you can then order at the bar. Food was ok, good, not great. Of you're walking by and hungry or thirsty, give it a try.

We were disappointed by our visit to The Anchor. I used to come to this place 45+ years ago as teenager with my parents and it was a real English pub that served excellent classic pub food (served on a white tablecloth and classic silverware) freshly cooked. Today it is more like a fast food disguised as a pub as... More

Supposedly one the oldest pubs in London but it must have been rebuilt because it is very solid with several floors and inviting terrace. Fries were not hot so lacked flavor. My husband's fish and chips were good but kind of pricy. He liked the mushy peas! My pulled pork bloomer was a lot more bread than meat. It is... More

Steak pie. HUGE! lovely tasting. Lovely gravy could not eat all of it. Will definitely return. Served hot. Typical pub but worth a trip. Husband had Scampi. Ok too. Probably gets very busy at peak times.

While just average from the food and tap side of things this is a very historical pub and it is neat to think of all who may have tipped a pint here. Like all Taylor-Walker pubs the menu is pretty standard, done ok but a bit boring....if you are more interested in food the Fuller's pubs are superior. The location... More

Staying in Southwark

Neighbourhood Profile
Southwark
Even before the arrival of the instantly iconic Shard, the riverside scene in Southwark had moved well beyond any up-and-coming phase of development. For quite some time, locals and out-of-towners alike have loved browsing the boutiques of Bermondsey High Street, foraging through the bounteous stalls at centuries old foodie haven Borough Market, and flocking to the banks of the Thames to enjoy some of Britain's biggest attractions such as Tate Modern and Shakespeare's Globe. Despite Southwark's many popular draws, instant calm can be achieved easily by turning down almost any side street. For more urban buzz, a quick stroll across famed bridges like the pedestrianized Millennium Bridge or the ever photogenic Tower Bridge yields access to the very core of Central London. And with London Bridge Station as this neighbourhood's main transportation hub, getting across town (or to anywhere in England for that matter) is a relative breeze.
