The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Spitalfields
For a glimpse of Georgian and Victorian London at its most pristine, or a peek into what's apt to be the next big global trend, the hipster zone of Spitalfields can provide hours of amazement. Around the clock, this is a haven for early morning bargain hunters sizing up its street markets, foodie foragers throughout the day, or late night revelers hitting some of London's most popular bars and clubs.

Wedged between the business-minded City of London, expressly trendy Shoreditch, and zestful Whitechapel, the lines between traditional and contemporary beautifully blur in this historic East End nexus.

Built by Huguenots but morphing through occupation by Methodists, Jews and now for several decades as a mosque. Less than five minutes walk from Brick Lane, a simple brick Georgian front and since the erection of the distinctive polished metal minaret is notable as a a focus for the Muslim community in Spitalfields and beyond. It is very welcoming and people of all faiths and possibly none can enter or spend time in peaceful contemplation. Worth a look if you’re in the area.

This building is located in 59 Brick Lane, on the corner of Fournier Street. This building was first established 1742 as a protestant chapel and served the local Christian community for more than six decades.

In 1898 the building became the Spitalfields Great Synagogue. And then in 1976 it became a mosque, the London Jamme Masjid mosque it is of today. The building represents the changes the community changes it has gone through since 1742.

I should have liked to visit the interior of this mosque, but unfortunately there was a funeral service in progress and I didn’t want to intrude. The most notable physical feature is the extraordinary minaret, which is shimmering metal tower reaching high into the sky from the pavement next to the mosque. The building has a complex history of changing use stretching back to the 18th century, which I detailed in my review back in December 2017. Suffice to say that it has always reflected the dominant religion of this fascinating area of London.

Historical building. Good old mosque and a place of worship for Muslim community. Persons of all faith can go here and offer prayers. You must cover your head, and your legs must be fully covered. Shoes are not allowed in. Nice architect.

This building has been a site of worship since 1743 when it was established as L'Eglise Neuve by the Huguenot immigrants who had flooded into the Spitalfields area. It was then taken over by the London Society in 1809, before becoming a Methodist Church until 1897, when it was converted into the Spitalfields Great Synagogue. It's latest change of use was in 1975 when it was re-designated as a mosque. The exterior is not particularly notable, apart from the original Huguenot sundial on the Fournier Street façade, with the poignant Latin motto which translates as 'we are shadows'. But the history of the building encapsulates the history of the development of the East End of London.
