Lovely grounds open to visitors for things to do on a full day out, set in a stunning location between Skiddaw and Bassenthwaite Lake. Hidden Gem Worth A Visit
This is a family home opened up to the public on two days a week and Sundays in August. A fascinating tour looking at how the other half lived and if you're lucky there will be a lady playing the piano to enjoy. Friendly and helpful staff. Also, there are large gardens to explore including the small St Beda's Church, apparently the oldest in the Lake District. It is still used once a month for services but you may have to dodge the sheep to get there, although not easy for anyone with limited mobility with gravel and uneven paths at the site. There is a lake and gardens to enjoy. I'd recommend visiting this attraction when the house is open.

    Family day out
We took a picnic and sat in the woods. It was really beautiful. The children loved the different play areas. The staff in the house were really friendly and gave the children activities to do while looking around the house. Thank you for a wonderful day out.
Thank you for your kind words and lovely review - come again!

    Wonderful afternoon out
This is indeed a hidden gem. We visited with children aged 6 and 8. We were glad we did the walk around the grounds the wrong way with the adventure playgrounds at the end or we would never have left the playgrounds the kids had so much fun. The house was really interesting and the piano playing and lace ladies (where we were able to try making lace) were an added bonus. There was a quiz to keep the kids busy. The grounds are beautiful and we enjoyed the views and being right next to the lake.

    Stunning scenery
Stunning walks and scenery - went with my husband and our dog - beautiful place. Didn’t go into house as wasn’t open on the day we went and had the dog anyhow but well worth the visit. Had a lovely coffee and a piece of cake after at the old mill tea room.
    Thank you so much

Good value for money lots of options.
Beautiful location at the foot of Dodd wood, parking is provided by forestry commission ampr cost 5.25 for about three hours. Parking spaces limited so go early peak season if you want a space. You buy ticket for house or gardens at old sawmill cafe. Lots of free trails in woods in Dodd wood. Also free toilets on site. Or pay £20 for family of five to walk the grounds of mire house and there are lots of little things for families of different ages to do with a lovely circular walk to a church and the lake. Not too far. We though it was good value for money. You pay more to see the house which is only open on certain days and afternoons from 1:30. We stopped at cafe next to car park- which does not have many seats outside so we were lucky nb. we had two Dogs with us, food was reasonable price and tasty. Staff were friendly but obviously very busy with tickets and food made for a bit of a queue. Would recommend- but have some patience on busy days.

    Not too be missed
What an absolute wonderful place to visit. We visited the house and the welcome was warm and genuine. Hunting the owls was good fun and we learnt so much of the history from the owner. We did the lakeside walk, which was lovely. Would highly recommend the house and gardens for all ages.
Thank you for this lovely review - a perfect one to end our season with!

    Peaceful and lovely
Visited here on a cold, wet day. I think I was the only visitor! Went with my dog and we walked around the gardens, down to the church and along the lakeside and back. We sat in the bee garden and watched the birds on the feeders, which was beautiful and peaceful. Some of the rhododendrons wee putting on their spectacular spring colour. The church was lovely and tranquil, and gave us some shelter from the biting cold wind! Was there for about an hour and a half.

    Not to be missed!
Have been coming to the Lakes regularly all my life but for some inexplicable reason have never visited Mirehouse. What an omission! The late Spring colours were amazing with Rhododendrons and Azalias at their best. The gardens provided peace and serenity even at the height of the Spring Bank Holiday with imaginative play opportunities for the kids. The walk to pretty St Bego’s church was rewarding and the views from the lake shore were spectacular and panoramic. We bumped into the lady of the house, hard at work in the Bee Garden, and she was utterly charming and friendly. The refreshments available at the Old Sawmill Tea Room were a lovely conclusion to our visit. The only disappointment was that we did not coincide with the house being open so a return visit will follow as soon as possible.

WOW !
Magical Mirehouse !
The most amazing, idyllic gardens with trails to follow, in the loveliest of surroundings ….
Lovely lady taking tickets, good car parking, clean toilets, great tearoom - and Dodd Wood is adjacent …
An ideal day out for everyone - and dog friendly !
Without doubt, the BEST gardens I’ve visited in the Lakes (or anywhere !)

A little gem. The house is lovely and it was super to meet the owners and be shown the six secret drawers in the bureau and be allowed to play one of their two gongs as well as seeking out the owls. Very highly recommended for a family day out with activities for both young and old, within and without the house. Beautiful gardens and walks.

Came across this little gem by luck. The gardens are kept in such great condition and we spent all afternoon here. So much to see and lots of places to explore. Very dog friendly too :)
