Good memories!

Such a great shame this wonderful museum has now closed, we have visited it for many years and shall miss going there in the future

Machines, history, mine, German roots, railway trip. Make sure you've got warm clothing if you go in the mine. A special destination for boys up to the age of 93.

This little gold-mine ( no apologies for that) is exactly that; an amazing collection of all kinds of things to do with mining in the Lake District. The exhibition is the result of one man's passion and that of his now departed wife ( a section of the exhibition is movingly dedicated to her and her love of the geology... More

This little museum has a great stock of books as well as the huge array of minerals. It's such a shame that this little gem is about to close

This is really a little gem of a museum where the Owner knows everything and is ever present. A real character worth listening to.

Thanks to the owner Ian Tyler we now know about the mining history of the Cumbrian area. Ian's enthusiasm and knowledge was good and we enjoyed our visit. The range of minerals, artifacts, photographs and memorabilia were extensive and interesting. We visited the museum on friends' recommendation and we were glad we did. We are sorry that Ian is selling... More

This small museum is packed from floor to ceiling with information - and would take hours to do it real justice! We only visited because it was a wet day, having passed it on previous visits, but once inside we were taken with the friendliness and encyclopaedic knowledge of the proprietor and the real insight into the working lives of... Good to see on a rainy day and there are plenty! Interesting to see how slate is obtained & crafted - you can buy almost anything made of slate. A look inside the old days and how things were back then. The pencil making factory is also interesting.
