A very interesting place to visit
The Wordsworth House and Gardens are a must visit. The House is full of objects and lovely old furniture. It makes you realise how Wordsworth lived, this was fascinating. The grdens has very old species of fruits and plants.

So good to walk around history.
We called in here for a self guided tour of Wordsworth House in Cockermouth. We parked across the river in a pay and display and walked over the footbridge and turned right to visit this place. Ticketing is very reasonable but if you are a National Trust member you can go in for free. We loved looking around and seeing just how they used to live. The rooms are amazing as is the walled garden area with superb fruits and herbs etc growing. We would highly recommend a visit.

    Well worth a visit.
While staying in Cockermouth we decided to visit Wordsworth House and Gardens. The whole place is well preserved and provides a fascinating insight into life in the Wordsworth household. Staff on hand to answer questions and embellish everything on view.

    Lovely down to earth house
Lovely down to earth house, where you can smell some of the herbs in the kitchen, try writing with a quill etc. The garden was lovely with lots of blossom on the trees and tulips in full bloom and the sound of the nearby river was peaceful. Good lot of information about the house and Wordsworth. Shame about the grammatical mistake in the drawing room 'Whose going to pour tea' - think Wordsworth would turn in his grave! The high street is also worth a wander with lots of tea rooms and interesting shops.

A snapshot of Wordsworth's early life
Everyone goes to Dove Cottage and Rydal Mount but this house in Cockermouth was where Wordsworth was born and spent his early childhood. It's a shame that there's very little of the original contents from his time there, but everything has been recreated as it might have been and you get a good insight into the period. The garden is also lovely to wander around.

A welcoming wander around Wordsworth House
Although we arrived near the end of the day we received a lovely warm welcome from the staff. Really interesting pieces of furniture, a lovely Georgian house with sash windows and high ceilings. Beautiful garden.

We drove to Cockermouth for an hour out and about whilst on holiday in the lakes and saw this beauty. We are NT members so went in for the last 20 minutes, it is the family home of William Wordsworth and was a beautifully preserved period piece with many lovely details and pieces.
The garden was one of the loveliest I have seen, some of the plants and trees dated back two centuries, they were fragrant and colourful. It was a joy and so peaceful, even the outside loos were reproduction!
Well worth a stop!

The NT employee who welcomed us to this interesting house was very helpful and obviously very enthusiastic about his subject. He told us a little about Wordsworth’s childhood and this certainly helped us picture this poet’s early life as we wandered the house. I loved the written artefacts lying on the wonderful pieces of furniture. The outside of the house looks rather drab but the interior was amazing and we could imagine the Wordsworth family living there. The garden was lovely and we enjoyed sitting in the garden admiring the lovely flowers and apple trees. We were really happy to be using our NT cards again and would highly recommend this interesting house.

Really brings you close to the Man himself. Following a short introductory film you get a small group, COVID secure, guided tour. It’s a beautiful atmospheric little cottage slightly overwhelmed by the later buildings around it.

We loved Wordsworth House, from the moment we entered we were welcomed enthusiastically and this continued throughout the house. The guides were knowledgeable and it was a bonus to see the servant in action in the kitchen. Our teens enjoyed the hands on rooms and had a go at writing with a fountain pen, making a rug, dressing up and looking at the children’s toys. We all loved the garden and had a little game of Jenga too. Our girls, strangely, really liked the toilets too! We could have spent longer in the garden but only put 2 hours on the parking.

Decided to book tickets for tour on way home - so glad we did. Next year promises an even better experience.
The guide was very knowledgeable and when asked questions proved he knew the history of Wordsworth - even his drug taking, although I suspect this would not have been mentioned if my partner had not asked.
Nice tea room with good coffee and treats on a cold wet day.

A wonderful day out for all of the family. Do ensure that you pre-book to avoid any disappointment. The guide was very informative and was able to respond to the many questions our small park seem to generate. The little cottage is a beautiful dream dream item.

We enjoyed the tea room and facilities. All very Covid guidleines orientated .

This made for a really fun way to spend some time on a rather soggy day. Despite the rain we enjoyed going out and looking at the gardens as they are getting ready for this year, and seeing how things have been restored. The house is informative without being overloading, really interactive for kids (mine loved the quill pen writing and sealing wax) and a really great step back in time. One of the best NT houses we have been to as a family

Thank you so much for taking some time to leave us this lovely review! We're so thrilled to be open in February for the first time and have loved seeing families enjoying the half term with us even though the weather hasn't been all that great! Do come back and see us later in the year if you can, to enjoy the garden in full bloom (and hopefully sunshine!) and of course we'll have our special exhibition, opening 15 March, to celebrate William's 250th birthday!

Noticed had few events on 30/7/22 at the ancestral home, well worth the 2hr trip, nice welcome, lovely staff, John (I think.... enjoy blackpool airshow btw) in the house, funny, helpful and knowledgeable. Beautiful decor, well maintained. Outstanding gardens, thousands of apples of various varieties.,fruit trees flowers etc. Saw the ladies embroidering, scree and maid busy in the kitchen, fantastic. Oh couldn't resist taking pics of toilets in courtyard.....Thankyou once again 💕star
