A really informative free walking tour of the salient features of Hull, with plenty of information about its maritime past. Our tour guide, Ailsa Oliver, was very knowledgeable about the history and answered all our questions thoroughly. The tour lasts about 2-2.5 hours and I would certainly recommend it. It drew our attention to detail that could have easily been overlooked. An amazing city!

Very insightful and interesting tour with Ian, covering many aspects of Hull’s maritime history. Really enjoyed learning about the city’s past and walking in the footsteps of those before us. Ian delivered the tour brilliantly, he was engaging, knowledgeable and made us all laugh - thank you Ian.
Can’t believe we get the opportunity to do this free of charge! As Hull natives, we learnt things about the city we never knew - so would wholeheartedly recommend to anyone local or those visiting the city.
Thanks again. Looking forward to the reopening of the Maritime Museum and the Arctic Corsair.

Did the FREE Guided Hull Maritime Walk one Sunday morning (guided by Ian who was welcoming, very knowledgeable and informative about the History of Hull)
Walk lasted 2 1/2 hours in which I learnt a great deal both about the Maritime History and Heritage of Hull in general. (made me very proud to be from Hull)
I did book my tour online which was easy to do, the website does say there are sometime a few spaces available if you just turn up. Tours are done on Thursdays and Saturdays at 10.30am , Sundays at 11.30 am. A shorter walk which lasts approx 1 1/2 hours on Sunday afternoons at 1.30pm . Walks start from outside Hull and East Riding Museum which is also well worth a visit if you have time.

The 2.5hr maritime tour turned out to be the highlight of our 1st ever visit to Hull. Ian, our guide was a 'local boy' & ex merchant seaman who gave us an incredible insight into this important port city with intimate knowledge of streets, museums, elaborate architecture & culture. We enjoyed Ian's personal memories & anecdotes, he was fun, engaging & bristled with pride for his city. We were also delighted to hear his input on where Hull is headed, exciting new projects in the offing, a city very much moving forward! Such was our sheer fascination with the detail of Ian's information & answers to our many questions, that our tour (helped by a magnificent late October day) extended way beyond the allotted time & would have lasted longer if we'd had our say! We came away from the maritime tour, indeed from Hull itself, with much respect for the city and its incredible, friendly and helpful inhabitants. Hull must be one of the nation's hidden gems. Yes, we now understand why it earned its 2017 European Capital of Culture accolade, being of great historical significance (1642, remember that date!) but the city hasn't rested on its laurels either and is definitely deserving of a return visit. Well done Ian, you were an amazing guide and 'hats off' to Hull'! We'll be back to continue where we left off; the art galleries and museums, the quality of which we thought you had to go to London to experience. Heck no, Hull has it all! Thank you for a city blessed with a great team of staff & volunteers united in their determination
to give visitors an extraordinary welcome and great insight into Kingston upon Hull.

This was a wonderful tour led by a great guide, Ian. He took us on a journey through time and space, starting with the city’s origins and showing how successive developments led to the city’s waterside layout that we see now. We had arrived in Hull the day before and already wandered around on our own - but this tour made the whole place make sense! A brilliant tour, and highly recommended.

Just completed maritime walk with Ailsa, who brought the maritime history of Hull to life.
Her enthusiasm for the city and her approachability made this the best of many walks we have done in Hull.
Learned such a lot.

Really interesting and informative talk and walk. Although my friend was born in Hull and I’ve lived here many years, there was lots of information which we had no idea about. The walk leaders were very knowledgable and approachable-can thoroughly recommend

We had a really interesting and informative free tour of Hulls maritime history. Our guide was very informative and we can’t wait to go in another year when some more of the exhibits are in place such as the light ship and Artic Corsair. Learned lots of things we didn’t know even after living here all our life! Some interesting maritime tales too.
Highly recommend it. We took 2 and half hours and there is a bit of walking. My Mum at 80 though happily made it round even in the cold.

A lovely way to find out about this amazing city. The guide was excellent: knowledgeable, funny and thoughtful. Nicely paced, and tackled the grim topics of whaling, slavery, the horrors of life aboard fishing trawlers and the aerial bombardment of ww2 without plunging the group into utter dispair. The development of Hull's civic architecture and town planning was an unexpected bonus, and a couple of questions prompted some impressively detailed answers. The volunteer guide was just fantastic: it was a real treat to spend a couple hours listening and learning from someone who loves to share their enthusiasm. On a scale of 0-5, my interest in Maritime History is about a 1, but I left the tour around 4.5. Impressive and recommended.
