THE FERENS ART GALLERY IS CURRENTLY CLOSED FOR MAJOR REFURBISHMENT AND WILL REOPEN EARLY 2017.

Opened in 1927, the award winning Ferens Art Gallery combines internationally renowned permanent collections with a thriving programme of temporary exhibitions. We also run a lively education and events programme that includes tours, talks and art workshops.

The gallery's first-class permanent collection of paintings and sculpture spans the medieval period to the present day. These include European Old Masters, particularly Dutch and Flemish, portraiture, marine paintings, modern and contemporary British art, including video. Highlights include masterpieces by Frans Hals, Antonio Canaletto, Stanley Spencer, David Hockney, Helen Chadwick and Gillian Wearing.

The art gallery is superb, the cafe is a joke. Although not busy, we waited 35 minutes for our coffee. 2 BLACK coffees. Nothing elaborate, coffee plus water!!!!!. When I asked where it was I was told they had lost the order and would do it straight away. 10 mins later I was about to ask for my money back... More

Went in with a friend. It was free so decided it was better than sat in a coffee shop. Not really my kind of art but seemed popular with others.

Visited as in Hull for a few days. The gallery was brilliant, with lots of interesting paintings. Will do other galleries now when I see them.

This wonderful gallery is obviously very popular with all age groups, and caters for many different tastes in art. It is beautifully laid out and easy to find your way around. The restaurant is so popular - no wonder, so well run, with excellent helpful staff serving quickly and efficiently. Lovely food as well.

We agreed to meet friends in the gallery's cafe. However, we managed to arrive early and viewed many of the exhibitions. Although I cannot claim to be anything more than a heathen when it comes art, I did enjoy strolling around the various rooms and found many of the exhibits to be of fine quality

If you even find yourself in Hull, go here. Un-pretentious, lively (many school kids), quiet and contemplative, ancient to modern, thoughtful and amusing. There is something for everyone here, whether you are an art connoisseur or just an ordinary bloke looking to kill a few hours between important meetings. (that's what he said anyway). Do it, you will not regret... More

We went on a misty March day. What I liked most was the mix of old (14c) and new art, the mix of old masters and young local talent. The gallery is not too big to be overpowering / boring or too small to be insignificant. We spent a couple of hours meandering and could easily make several visits. The... More

Beautifully renovated building, good cafe but why put it in the shop? Pictures well labelled with more information than usual but it is unreadable - small font and pale grey print! As most of the visitors on the day we went were white haired almost none of them could read the labels. The large print copies were at the front... More

This was always a lovely art gallery, but since its refurbishment for the city of Culture Award, it has got even better. OK, so it's not big, but unlike, say, the National Gallery in London, you CAN manage to see everything, and it's with seeing too. The Gallery possesses some real delights and I especially enjoy the marine paintings, but... More

Visited with a group of young children and the volunteers were lovely and friendly. There was a small room for children that was staffed by two wonderful volunteers who were very good at encouraging the children to touch and explore the wonderful things around the room. The children didn't want to leave. They enjoyed exploring the rest of the galleries... More
