A local Dover tour guide took us to see several sites in and around Dover, and the Western Heights were our first stop. They are quite the impressive fortification, especially considering that they were constructed in the late 1700's. We started the tour by visiting...More

Standing on the Western Heights looking out over Dover Harbour has a certain magic on a misty day. You may not have the distant views, but the overall panorama of this busy site has much to offer. More locally on the Heights you can inspect...More

Lovely walk around western heights today, fabulous views and the fort really gives you that feeling of history, although visited in a day when the fort wasn’t open, it’s still a lovely walk. Paths are a little run Dow and my 77 yr old Dad...More

So much work has been done to revive the site. The people are knowledgeable and they really care about the history of this corner of Dover. Got to put it on must see if you're visiting

Dover's Western Heights are one of the relatively unknown attractions in Dover. They are a set of huge fortifications, mostly constructed in the 19th century after fears of a French invasion. The architecture is amazing, and there is loads to see, as well as amazing...More

Beautiful views across the channel and lots of places to explore. You can make the walk as hard or as easy for yourselves as you like and can venture all the way over the hills towards the seafront area. It can be difficult to walk...More

There is a sign to it from near the railway station, or you can approach through a housing estate nearer the middle of Dover. The area is quite fascinating, with large military remains, but sadly no sign boards to explain what it all was. Multiple...More

Normally western heights including walking round the outside of the huge Redoubt Fort is quite impressive. There are old tunnel entrances and platforms where second world war guns were placed and the views of the port and castle are amazing. The fort is a large...More

There's a steep climb to get up there, but it's worth it. First you can admire the views over the harbour and the castle, and you can see the banksy. And then you can go inside and explore the grounds which are eerie. There are...More

There is a cafe selling drinks and cakes inside the Redoubt and a burger van but only over the open weekend, four days a year. But the site is only 5minutes drive from the main town, or a 15 minute slow walk.
