Castle and Views from it were amazing
We did the underground hospital tour. Explored the castle with its decorated rooms and great views from the top. Luckily we had great clear weather. The English Heritage staff were helpful and full of information.

    Dover Castle was amazing!
You've got to go to Dover Castle! It was our very first activity that we did when we arrived in England, and we were very glad we went there. Give it at least 3 hours, minimum; there's a lot to see, and you can have a relaxing lunch at one of the cafes on site. Definitely do the Secret Wartime Tunnels tour. Walk the castle grounds. Tour the castle, all the way to the roof, and go see the chapel, as well. The views of the coast line are amazing from various places around the castle grounds.

Go to the Front Entrance and spent hours
The castle and grounds date back over 800 years and one could easily spend 5 hours here. As such, get there early. Our challenge is that we took the train to Dover and got off at the train station. Our app said it was a 1 mile walk. Well... that would include twisty roads, with a steep incline - so fortunately we found a bus. The bus takes you close to the rear entrance. The front entrance has a visitor center, instructions, and from reading the other reviews, access to guided tours. The rear entrance? We got brief instructions and a map. Having said that, we saw the history of England as relative to the castle, a war museum, quite a few grounds including a trebuchet! In the castle itself with royal bedroom, play area, dining, storage, kitchen, you climb stairs to fantastic views of the countryside from the top. We also saw the medieval tunnels, a medieval church, an ancient Roman lighthouse - and the last thing we saw was the actual visitor center. Took us 4+ hours for all that. Very well maintained and restored.

    Day Trip Exploring Dover
With any EHS you need to make this trip an entire day trip. This site has so much to offer. From the Tunnel tours, to the medieval Castke and it’s surroundings. Learning about history is a given. I would highly recommend this for any WWII buffs that want to learn more and walk the actual tunnels that were integral in Operationn Dynamo.

Pricey but overall a great day out.
Ok negatives first: This is a very expensive place to visit, but you can spend all day here. There is loads to see and do, and the restaurant (NAAFI) served lovely meals, albeit pricey. £3.25 for a small orange juice made me break out in a cold sweat! I recommend you take as much food as you can in as the prices were very high. The scheduled tours in some of the tunnels need looking at: the Hospital tour felt like were were rushed through, then the other tour WW2, we would have had to queue with an Autistic child. Anyone with an ASD child knows they just can't queue, and when I mentioned this to the volunteer outside, she didn't understand what I was saying...that we needed to effectively book our place in the tour, then come back just before it started. Waiting 20-25 mins outside to go in is not feasible with an ASD child - they would go nuts!! So - please try and make allowances for SEN people. Positives: There are multiple things to explore, and the highlight for me was the 2000 year old Roman light house. The Medieval tunnels were amazing. The main castle tower was great, but I was shocked to see a local school bring very young pupils go right up to the top of the tower and some of them climbing up the walls to look out. The teachers were very irresponsible. Obv not English Heritages fault, but one day it might end in tragedy. Although this looked like there were more negatives than positives, I would say overall, this is a great day out. The views from the castle were amazing.

    Food selection poor
History is good value, guides are very knowledgeable and helpful. We have been twice now and found that no sandwiches available both tines. Wen to both eateries at 1:30 one had no hot food ir sandwiches and the other had hot food but no sandwiches. I know that they want to make money to keep the castle maintained, but £2.50 fir a can if Coke us a bit much. Tunnels experience us very good. Would recommend a visit and take a packed lunch.

    So interesting and educational!
This was an amazing place to visit. My wife and I spent about 6 hours there touring the castle and its grounds. It has an incredible history and well worth the visit. Don't know exactly how many miles we walked that day but be prepared to climb up and down some stairs.

    Don’t miss it
Don’t miss this. We arrived into Dover aboard a cruise ship and having spent much time in the UK over many years we decided to acquaint ourselves in and around the Dover Port area and Dover Castle was the focus. The cruise shuttle service had a stop in the town area then proceeded to the castle at £7pp - very well worth the small cost. We spent a good 4 hours in and around the castle, spending a good 15 minutes quizzing King Henry II and then other actors playing various historical characters. From memory the cost was circa £27pp but there is a seniors discount. The war time tunnels, on the same site, are also worth a visit and admittance is included in the castle ticket. The only issue was having to queue about 20 minutes as numbers are limit in the guided tours.

    Great day at Dover Castle
So we visited Dover Castle on a very windy day with threats of having to close. However, we had the best of days. The history is amazing as were the staff who actually made the whole day so much better with their knowledge and helpfulness. We ate in the NAAFI - great food and choice and again staff were wonderful. We visited the Dressing Station - OMG so proud to be British😉 The queue for the war tunnels were a bit too long for the young ones (but I've been twice before!). Thank you English Heritage.

Me, my girlfriend and a couple friends visited Dover castle and was appalled by the admission price, granted we decided to go on a day where there was a WW2 event on which we were unaware of. I can’t see how this company can charge and additional £15 admission on top of the normal admission price. On top of that, it was boring, not much to do/look at. We then went for some pizza down by the war tunnels and the pizza was horrible. I was charged £13 for a pizza which was soggy, chewy and just terrible. I will not be returning or visiting any other of this company’s castle that’s for sure.

A really interesting multi dimensional site. There is roman history, Norman and later plus the WW history. The tunnel tours gave a great view of what happened during WWII. Could have spent more time exploring but ran out of steam. Very helpful staff!

I visited here with one of my daughters, the welcome by staff at the ticket / visiting centre was exceptional, as they were very informative and friendly. Having visited quite a few different European museums and attractions in the past couple of years I can say that by far the service and welcome by staff here is the very best. We sat at the picnic benches having our lunch with the view of the harbour and surrounding areas which was amazing. The walk around the grounds, the castle and the museum was great.

Excellent visit to castle though it was disappointing to learn that the medieval tunnels were not open to the public. Very helpful staff. Could have done with more signage. Very good parking available within the castle. Will definitely visit again when in the area.

The Castle itself was huge and pretty cool; however, don't bother going into the wartime tunnels. The tour was unorganized and unclear. I was told to wait one place and then got yelled at for not being in the right place on time even though I got there half an hour early and waited where they told me to. The whole thing was confusing and unorganized. Definitely visit everything else in the castle complex though.

Spent a wonderful 6 hours here on an incredibly windy day in the half term! Dover castle is always windy no matter when you go but on our visit I think extra wind was added as my child was literally swept away 😂
We got to do both tunnels, the castle, the walk and some of the smaller exhibits. There is quite a bit of work taking place on one side but it made no difference to us. The people that did our tunnel tours were great and the lovely lady (I believe her name was ronnie) was extra amazing with the facts she was telling us all and my 7 year old was completely immersed! She was also very kind when I had to leave one of the videos due to my 3 year old having a bit of a tired toddler meltdown down.
We went in the NAAFI restaurant at the end of the day for hot drinks. It was close to closing so take away only but the staff were still very friendly and helpful. We all had a fabulous day and can’t wait to come back

Loved the tours (guided and self-guided) and the views. You can definitely fill a whole day out here learning about the castle's vary varied history spanning many years. Medieval tunnels weren't open (we think due to maintainence) but we didn't know this until we had walked twice round the castle trying to get to them

Although there's an amazing array of military history there, you queue for HOURS to see the underground exhibits via compulsory guided tours. Today, 3 hours to see both. No mechanism for booking a time slot in advance.
