This gate is the entrance to Canterbury Cathedral and is beautifully decorated. As I was with a tour group I had to go back to the gate after looking through the Cathedral. The statue at the center is beautiful and the shields were very interesting....More

... and set in the square in front of the cathedral which has an eclectic mix of shops & buskers. This is the only part of the site which is free as they charge to visit the cathedral itself. Wonderfully photogenic!!!

It’s all about power... foreign conquests, the two organized religions it obviously represents, and the monarchies it went, and continues to go, through. The ornate carvings say it all.

There are only a couple og gates left from Norman/Roman times,but they do give an indication of what life was like inside the walls and how people got into the city.Apparently there is even a secret gate!
