- hilary dLondon, United Kingdom806 contributionsVerulamium Museum 12.2.24We finally got to visit this very interesting museum on Monday 12th February,we attempted to visit last Sunday and it was closed! Its a great compact museum with lots to see and read,my favourite are the floor tiles, what people ate and drank, coins, clothes and enterntainment. The location is beautiful, walking through the park on a lovely sunny day!Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 12 February 2024
- Suzanne1London591 contributionsLots of Roman informationGreat small museum, interesting lay out lots to see and read about, the amphitheatre is included in the admission price and just a short walk away. In the adjacent park there is free section of Roman wall and a mosaic in a white building, which are free. The loos need attention, no hot/warm water and the hand drier not fit for purpose.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 24 February 2024
- david pLondon, United Kingdom98 contributionsRoman history revealedThis museum is a great place to educate people about all aspects of Roman history and how they lived their lives boasting many unique artefacts from their times. The museum itself is on one of the largest Roman sites in Britain and as well as the museum you can go across the road to the Roman theatre and walk around the remains. There is ample parking at the museum and a large park adjacent. We spent an enjoyable couple of hours at the museum and the theatre and left with a greater understanding of that era of history.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 6 March 2024
- therichastillStevenage, United Kingdom3,460 contributionsDiscount for localsVerulamium Museum is located on the edge of Verulamium Park. It is the history of Roman St Albans and has a collection of excavations which were made in the 20th Century. There are some amazing mosaics which have been beautifully preserved as well as other Roman artifacts. There is lots of information about how Roman life in Verulamium was and what happened to the Roman city in later years. It was quite interesting. If you are a resident of St Albans you get a discount however other parts of Hertfordshire do not. There is a decent gift shop with plenty of souvenirs which will appeal to people of different ages.Visited April 2024Travelled soloWritten 7 April 2024
- Greg J5 contributionsA very good museumThe museum is quite impressive and larger than it initially appears. It features a variety of excellent exhibits, offering plenty to explore. My only criticism is that the museum dedicates an excessive amount of space to discussions about the excavation process. While this topic is important, it does not warrant the extensive museum space it currently occupies.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 1 July 2024
- Mat OLondon, United Kingdom98 contributionsWorth visitingVery nice exhibits. All on one floor which makes it very easy to spend time to look around and enjoy. A car park is available but be aware it is run by the council and not the museum so you have to pay. We thoroughly enjoyed it. RecommendedVisited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 15 July 2024

This museum is very interesting and contains lots of information and artefacts from St Albans in the roman times . Its free for locals and there's a good gift shop. For children, they also offer some activity sheets to complete as they go around the museum . It is very interesting and you can learn something new every time you visit. As well as this, it is also a chance to admire some beautiful roman mosaics.

This small museum showcases items found (and continue to be excavated) in Verulamium. We enjoyed spending about an hour in here before enjoying an afternoon in the park. There is a fun 'scavenger' hunt for kids and the gift shop has some unique items. There are some real treasures in this museum - we've been all over Italy and not seen some of the items on display here. Highly recommend if you're into Roman History and want to learn more. We also went to see the nearby ruins, there isn't much to see, but if it's a nice day there's no reason not to go and look at them, and imagine who stood there 2000 years ago.

We visited here with our 5 year old grandson. There were lots of artefacts for him to look at. Some interactive things to do too. Although the concept of the Romans was too advanced for him to understand, the museum is laid out in an attractive and interesting way. He enjoyed the dressing up clothes too. We discovered that residents with an AL3 postcode are entitled to free entry into the museum.
The shop has some reasonably priced artefacts for sale.
The structure of the museum building is lovely. There’s plenty of car parking nearby.

The displays and reconstructions are full of information. But I was very disappointed with the customer service. The staff made little attempt to welcome us or or give any help. Not even toilet paper to hand!
I have wanted to visit for many years . but this will be memorable for all the wrong reasons.
Using the website to plan my visit was difficult, it assumed an amount of familiarity with the area, tourist Signage from the city outskirts was poor, and disability parking difficult to find.
I didnt realise what a fascinating city St Alban's is, but it does not celebrate its features or market itself as a tourist destination. Such a pity. A

Very disappointing. We travelled a long way and stayed over in a hotel to see this. Despite what this website says the museum was closed to the public. Because of a performance through the summer access to the Roman Theatre was severely limited even when no performance and even this was spoilt by grass cutting. The Hypocaust was open and very good. Fortunately we were not charged. Don't travel until things are fully open and the performance season is over.

Lots of artefacts here and I'd say essential if you want to understand more about the Romans who made this place their home. I found the most stunning exhibits to be the mosaics, excavated from sites nearby and put back together here in the museum to stunning effect. The every day objects are very interesting too, from glassware, to jewellery and various tools. Some of these are displayed in room settings, others in glass cases.
The entrance fee is very reasonable - with a discount too if you're over 60. I didn't have to prove it but then what woman would happily add on years! We bought tickets which also included entrance to the remains of the Roman amphitheatre over the road. It was sunny and windy when we went, but I'm glad we saw it. Don't expect too much as you do have to use a bit of imagination as there's not that much left. There would originally have been wooden, banked seats around the outside and other things like a triumphal arch behind the stage.

Fantastic museum full of artefacts and informative descriptions. We spent about 3 hours going round but could have spent longer. If you want to see more artefacts than the main displays there are pull out drawers beneath with more catalogued finds. We came away with a greater depth of knowledge of Roman Britain and realising that even Iron Age Britons were far more sophisticated than we thought! Although we went on a day where there were some school visits we were still able to take everything in and the kids were well behaved and interested! The admission fee of £6 each and £4 for a guide book is amazing value, and it’s one of the best guide books we’ve had from an attraction! Highly recommended

Visited this museum yesterday with some friends visiting from Australia and we all enjoyed it very much. Good value for money. Afterwards we walked along to the cafe in the park and had a nice lunch. It's a real shame that the museum is closed on Sundays as that surely would be the most popular day of all to visit.

Very engaging museum that brings to life Roman St Albans. My dad is a history buff and really interested in all things Roman. Myself, mother and our visitor from the US have no special interests. The excellent displays appealed, regardless of your level of prior knowledge.
There are some stunning pieces including the mosaics; a hoard of Roman coins; a statue of a Roman goddess; a coffin decorated with shells; beautiful glass and fine pottery. The quality is as good as that anywhere in the UK including the British Museum and Cirencester. St Albans was one of the most important towns in Britain in Roman times. The museum also does a good job of bringing to life more ordinary Romans and everyday life - how they lived in their homes, that they eat and their work. If you are local and have not been for while it makes a great half-day out. The arrangements were all very well organised and we felt safe during our visit.

Does it have good access for wheelchair users

Verulamium Museum is wheelchair-accessible - the entrance, shop and galleries are all on one level and there is a lift to reach the accessible WC in the basement.
There is a sloped path from the NCP car park to the entrance, the glass doors are quite heavy to open but staff can assist.
Visit the Facilities + Access tab on our website under "Visit" and "Verulamium Museum":
You can watch our Video Guide to Verulamium - a collaboration with Oaklands College Supported Learning and Media students.
We are currently putting together a more detailed Practical Guide and Visual Story for visitors which will be available online soon.
You can also view the site via Google Street View.
We collaborate with an Access Advisory Group on how to improve our visitors' experience. If you have any feedback or suggestions in terms of accessibility, please do get in touch (museum@stalbans.gov.uk), we'd love to hear from you.
