Our group enjoyed this interesting walking especially the opportunity to see the anchor from the Cunard passenger liner QE2.

A lovely area in the docks, so many ships have departed from here, Its full of history and makes you realise how important the docks in Southampton have been to the cruise industry over many years.

Wonderful Voyage. Departed from New York City 7-Day transatlantic Journey on the beautiful remastered Queen Mary 2. Exceptional service. Fantastic cuisine. Elegant accommodations fantastic onboard activities and a world-class Spa. Southampton was wonderful Cotswolds beautiful took a trip out to Dalton Abbey, but could not wait to get back on board the QE2 what a wonderful voyage.

Alighting from a cruise, we decided to go on a walk from Ocean Cruise Terminal around Southampton Old Town following the Old Town Wall. Fairly east really. From the terminal, head out to the security gate and then go left. You will soon see the 1st significant part of the wall, God's House Towel. From there, head towards High Street and you are at QE2 Miles. Follow this road and you see many features of the wall including the Holy Rood Church with an interesting history, St. Michael's church then onwards to Bargate, Arundel Tower and a host of other interesting sites to explore. Do end up at WestQuay shopping mall, the largest in Southampton where you can find a wide array of shops and food. We found an old Favourite Harry Ramsden and they are still as good as they have been in the past.

Yes, this does take you through the pedestrianised area of town as that is what has appeared in this part of the city. The point of the QEII mile is that it takes you from the top of town near the SeaCity Museum and the Titanic Memorial, down to the docks. On the way, you can branch off to see other historic points of interest. Halfway down, you will come across BarGate and then the QEII anchor and Holy Rood church ruins, you can veer off to explore the Old City Walls. It depends on whether you're interested or want to be cynical about this part of Southampton as to whether you appreciate this - pick up a map to guide you and make the most of it!

Wondering why this has its own TA entry? It's a route from the top of town to the docks, going through the main street. It walks you through lots of shops & restaurants. It takes you past Bargate and you can glimpse the city walls.

Reminds of Southamptons heritage.

I've seen the negative comments and can only shake my head. Not only did I enjoy my time in Southampton, but I thought that the well-organized, nicely marked, and historically fascinating QE2 mile, complete with sidewalk markers, was the highlight of the visit, ranking ahead of the Seacity Museum by just a little bit.

Chilly, raw, occasionally wet weather was not daunting; rather it was an addition to the ambience and authenticity of the place.

We stopped on the way home for a pint and a bite to eat, and we went home feeling that the time was most well spent!

The QE2 mile is the quickest way to get to and from the top of the centre of Southampton's City from the town quay. It is a street lined with banks, shops, shopping malls, cafe's, hotels, pharmacies etc. and a market (mainly food) on Saturdays. Every commercial enterprise that you could need is concentrated in one street. It is not an attraction in itself (unless you want to read the history time-line located on the pavements or visit The Bargate (see separate review). However directly parallel to the west of this street is the old town and very impressive (see Roman Walks or Old Town walk) and directly to the east of this street you can walk through 5 very beautiful parks (see Central Parks).

Very disappointed as the pedestrian precinct was lined with smelly fast food stalls. The streets of Southampton are dirty and rubbish strewn. Not what we expected at all. The only area worth visiting is the old quarter.
