Right next to the WestQuay mall and all the other stores, hard to miss this old castle style structure to walk through. Also known as the town gate.
Nice photo op

The moment we saw this gate we were taken by its presence and part in history. The gate stands proudly in the historic centre of Southampton as a reminder of the history of this part of England

Right in the middle of the historical quarter of the city, this old gate is imposing and quite beautiful. I was a bit put off by all of the reviews which called it a hunk of rock. Yes, it is stone construction and is of historical significance. I was there in the evening so I did not even try to go to the museum which is supposed to be there. But, it made for some pretty nice photos.

A very interesting ruin in the heart of Southampton. Our guide was very informative about the history of the city.

This is a remnant of the city walls. There is a nice photo of what it looked like before the war when this stretch was integrated into the city fabric. Now it stands alone as a ruin and a relic. Very old part of the city.

An astonishing surviving piece of history of significance, but unless you booked and paid for a guide to explain there is nothing for the visitor to tell them that it dates from c1180. The former Guildhall on the upper floor seems permanently closed again with no explanation.

The Bargate is the poster boy for Southampton, the picture is everywhere. It is a very recognisable image, even seem on the city badge. But the city fathers have not utilised this medieval fortress / town gate - everything locked shut and no information boards either.
It looks, and is, rundown, surely the city authorities can obtain some funding and preserve this bit of history, whilst making it accessible to the public, - currently it is little more an unofficial public toilet.

There are only a few historic attractions in this town, but this is one of them, a very old fort, and worth a short visit, which is what we did on our day here.

The Bargate IS Southampton. The old north gate to the magnificently walled old town. Yet it stands alone no longer attached to the walls it was built with. Changes in the road system around it and the awfully designed buildings that until recently stood around it, has left it looking lonely and insignificant. Of course, the town of Southampton was ravaged by the German bombing in the second world war but since then it has been even more ravaged by the architects and town planners who have done nothing to beautify this once stunningly beautiful city. Shame on them all

Great value for money. We spent around 90 minutes here. The walk there was noce along the spit. Getting the ferry back was an extra highlight and worth doing.
