The Bargate is part of the defensive wall system protecting the city from the 1300's. Local historians offer inexpensive tours, and walks around the walls. The city is tearing down some buildings near the wall to expose more of the structures. All very interesting

This gate is from the 13th century wall, which also includes a guild hall, protecting Southampton. There are tours for only a few pounds of the entire wall complex.

This is a very imposing structure on the high street of Southampton. It's nice to see, but a proper "visit" would call for more signage, I think. There is some, but not enough detail to really tell the story of this gate and explain why...More

The original old main gate into the city. Still looks imposing although the developments around it detract fron the old gate.

A beautiful building, which unfortunately, both in the past and recent years has suffered from poor renovation attemps and lack of repairs. It now look out of place as the Council have allowed building around it to be too modern in design and therefore spoiling...More

The Bargate is a great old structure and one of many on our self guided tour of Jane Austen in Southampton. Its a great spot for pics and next to a large shopping area.

Nice historic land mark. Right at the end of the main shopping area. Good photo op’. From a distance you think your walking up to a castle.
