The gallery is wholly taken over by BAS 8 contemporary art. The "Perseus Room" is the only piece of the permanent collection on show for the duration.

This is a very small gallery, 90% of which when I visited, was taken up with the British Art Show. If they had charged I would have asked for my money back. Would like to have seem all the paintings that had been removed to make way for the British Art show which was distinctly average.

Such an unmarketed attraction ! Southampton CC has an amazing collection of art and rarely announces its shows effectively. The British Art Show 8 was launched on 16th October and goes on until 15 January 2017 and is showing at three locations, at least, including this one. I suspect there has been much more funding this time around, mostly due... More

Small but perfectly formed as they say. Eclectic collection of pictures and sculptures, well worth a visit.

Or what some people might call second-division, but I don't, because the art world can be small and cliquey! Here are many examples of lesser known (as well as the well known, such as Bridget Riley and Graham Sutherland) painters. Notes are copious so you may want to skip them, though most contain an interesting quote by the artist or... More

There are not many quite places in a busy city but the art gallery offers moments of calm. Interesting collections and free to visit. A few more benches would be nice, so that you could sit and absorb the art. Currently has some of the many zebras (Marwell Zoo promotion) that have popped up around the city (with more in... More

For a small gallery there is a wide range of excellent art which should appeal to many tastes from Monet to Modern. You can also get married here!

The upsides - there are many. A very good quality permanent collection of relatively modern works (say post 1880) from most movements - including pre-Raphaelite, Euston Road and Camden Town schools, '50s and even some YBAs, of which a selection is on display on one (upper) floor in the atrium and 5 or 6 galleries with themed displyas. 3 or...
