About
For over 800 years people have been inspired and moved by the history and beauty of Portsmouth Cathedral. From humble beginnings in 1180 at the heart of Portsmouth's original settlement, this church, dedicated to Thomas Becket, became a parish church around 1320 and a Cathedral in 1927. It has been integral to the development of Portsmouth as a modern, vibrant city. The Cathedral reflects the constantly changing, growing and unfolding of the Christian faith, displaying a harmony of three distinct architectural styles which provide a source of light, warmth and space. On your "voyage of discovery" you will see the close connections of the 'Cathedral of the Sea' with the seafaring community and the Royal Navy from the church's foundation.

A fine building. We were delighted to see the Creation tapestries which are on tour. The choir and organ are excellent.

So glad to be back in Portsmouth and have the opportunity to visit the Cathedral again! It's such a beautiful place of worship. Every visit I notice something new. On this occasion I focused on the many and varied memorials around the building which give some insight into the social history of the area. On previous visits I've focused on the stained glass windows and architecture which are very beautiful in my opinion.

Ros, one of the staff on duty pointed out a few things to me that I wouldn't have noticed including a cannon ball next to a memorial. She was very informative and kind; very easy to talk to and I was grateful for her welcome.

Entry to the Cathedral is free, but donations are welcome. The Cathedral is in the old part of Portsmouth about 10 minutes walk from Gunwharf Quays.

Very much a must-see place if you are visiting Portsmouth.

A building who's sections date back over different centuries, still has a wonderful unified feel to it. A lot of this is achieved by its light and airy white wash, and minimal, almost monastic decor and fittings. I found the simple, covid friendly alter particularly poignant. Other cathedrals stake their claim through a sense of grandeur and splendour; this one achieves equal success through a sense of peace and togetherness.

On our visit we were given some excellent historical background by a volunteer helper and I also want to commend the cathedral for the range and quality of items in the gift shop area.

We now live a stones throw from this cathedral and hear the clock chiming the quarter hours and tolling the hours.
We are very lucky to have this as a feature of the view from our study window

When we visited Portsmouth Cathedral we were welcomed by a Volunteer who provided us with a brief history of the cathedral and handed out a leaflet.

Portsmouth Cathedral is quite modern and has an interesting history which is well explained in the leaflet and on boards throughout the interior. Visitors can easily recognise the sections of the building which were built in different centuries.

There are a number of interesting features to see (e.g. the Tomb of an unknown Sailor of the Mary Rose, the Gold Weather Vane, etc.).

Portsmouth Cathedral is well worth a visit.

We were very warmly welcomed by a member of staff who talked through a brief history of the cathedral and gave us a guide leaflet. The cathedral has an interesting history which is well explained in the leaflet and on boards throughout the cathedral. The building has lots of natural daylight which is quite unusual for an English cathedral.

Quite a modern cathedral but beautiful on the outside and in. It was lovely to visit on a Sunday when a visiting choir was practising. I was fascinated by the architecture.

We together with our daughters family attended a Carol's service in this Cathedral and in accordance with Covid everyone worn masks at all times, and seating was in accordance with requirements. The atmosphere was electric and everybody thoroughly enjoyed the evening.
