What a wonderful little museum. The displays bring the birthplace of Charles Dickens to life. Some of the exhibits belonged to Dickens himself, including his snuff box and even the very couch on which he died! Gruesome! Well worth a visit.

Mind you, the website makes it sound quite delightful. So, we made the trek--by foot--from the Historic dockyard to the birthplace. It was a bit difficult to find. I mean, there were signs, but then when we got on the street itself, the house was so discreet we actually walked by it the first time. It is literally in a... More

I am a freelance writer and when on holiday in Portsmouth decided to visit Charles Dickens birthplace. We arrived at 10.10 and my husband asked for 4 tickets only to be told by the man in reception " You can't come in full up." There was no "maybe if you came back later" or "let me have a look," or... Easy enough to find by following the brown signs. Set among an unattractive housing estate you almost feel as though you are going to the wrong place, but amid the grim architecture is this little haven. A pretty, Georgian street, with well kept buildings and old tram lines. A very small car-park is at the far end. The charge is... More

I went with a friend who is a huge Charles Dickens fan, although I have visited before on several occasions. We were terribly unlucky on the day we went as our arrival coincided with the arrival of a large group of Italian students (about 30 of them) so there was literally no room for us to enter any of the... Be cautious of the time of day a mosque has been allowed next door so may be busy when trying to park or walk on pavements etc, shame they built the housing estate right on top of it as well.

It is easy to take heritage for granted. We walk past it every day. But if you live in or near the great city of Portsmouth then you really should take in this amazing piece of genuine history. We are incredibly lucky (in this area) to have a rich wealth of historical attractions, its our duty to treasure them for... More

I'm a huge fan of Charles Dickens and unlucky it's closed for the season. I was not able to fit in a better time to visit but still wanted to see.. Will go back hopefully on a better time and give a better rating as it's not their fault it's closed. LOVE HIS WORKS
