Excellent studios set in a really fascinating historic fortification. So much packed into the most interesting part of Portsmouth, if those walls could talk!
And now the arches have been brought to life with some of the most creative talent the city has to offer, there is something for every taste from ceramics to jewellery making, to fine art portraits and contemporary collage making, paper marbling and silk scarves and so much more.
The artists are really friendly and welcoming, lots of them do demonstrations and some even let you have a go for free, perfect for a family day out!
And if that’s not enough there is also a wonderful little beach and an excellent café with really friendly staff and the best coffee in the city!

Not every restoration project turns out great and when Portsmouth City Council set out to revamp the Hotwalls area to turn the arches into art and craft studios to be honest I didn’t thing it would turn out as good as it did. A lovely section of art and craft studios in a nice pleasant setting. Worth a visit to browse what’s on offer. You might even find a piece of art to take home.

I have to say that when the idea of refurbishing part of the old city defences into the Hotwalls Studios was first suggested, I was not particularly confident of its success. However, I am very pleased to admit that I was wrong. The site has been operational now for some time and has rejuvenated a tired area. The Canteen cafe is a popular success and has added much life to the scene. There are specific opening dates, but most weekends there are several artist studio outlets open. Well worth stopping, especially if you are on the way to one of the Pubs and Restaurants at Point.

I have visited the studios numerous times, usually for Open Studios but I’ve enjoyed other events in the Round a Tower too. It’s a great spot for meeting local artists and sourcing high-end art for special gifts. I love the atmosphere and the location. Visiting is a must for locals in Portsmouth as well as people visiting the city. Easy enough to reach from Portsmouth Harbour train station and the best views in Portsmouth.

I love Hotwalls - I first discovered it during Open Studios and have been back several times - it’s perfect for gifts - ceramics - bags - beautiful marbled silk scarves and other gorgeous items. All the artists are really friendly and happy to discuss their work. It’s my favourite place on the South Coast
If you are into arts and crafts and are looking for something a bit different then it’s well worth a visit.

The Hot Walls Studios is a great place to spend a morning or afternoon, strolling around the numerous and varied types of art studios there and chatting to the very talented artists!
If you’re lucky there are sometimes opportunities to even participate and learn one of the arts such as the Turkish Ebru marbling studio from the very talented James Mouland Ebru artist... 👩🎨 🖼 🎨

I visited the studios when they first opened in 2016, and make sure I always visit when in Portsmouth. I love the public-facing aspect of the studios, and the range of affordable art on offer. The Canteen offers delicious food to accompany any visit.

Nice area utilising what appeared to be arches under part of the old city defences. On the Sunday we visited there were two or three of the artist studios open which had some interesting items for sale.
