Historically Painswick Rococo Garden is very important, as it is the sole complete survivor from the brief Rococo period (1720 – 1760). These gardens differ from the more traditional 19th and 20th century designs, as they were mini landscapes designed almost as theatrical sets for the home owner to entertain his guests with lavish garden parties. One thing they were not were great flower gardens. At Painswick, romantic follies combine with long vistas, informal plantings, and a large kitchen garden to create a relaxing environment for todays visitor to appreciate how our forefathers lived and to understand how gardens have changed over the centuries.

Marvelous location. We have visited for the day, outdoor theatre and a wedding. The place has much to recommend to all visitors and a great cafe. Worth a return visit

Visited with a group in the late summer, but warm enough to stroll around, cost £7 on the door, but you can while away a few hours exploring. The initial view is over the valley, where you see most of the attraction. We walked through the fruit/vegetable garden up to the Maze section which has 3 different mazes. At the... More

We hadn't planned on visiting the Rococo Gardens but are so glad we did. Dog friendly with beautiful, beautiful gardens. It's quirky with something different around each corner. Highlight of our holiday.

Bought tickets via TravelZoo site and thoroughly enjoyed the visit to this delightful small(ish) Garden. It's situated beautifully and I loved the structures and points of interest around the site. The Guide Book was a real help in getting around and understanding the history of the Garden and the relevance of the various little buildings. Had lunch in the onsite... More

Nice place to walk around, there is a small maze, very off road as in not many proper paths so if your unsteady on your feet you might struggle. Its the sort of place that once you've done it that's it .

Had a lovely few hours walking around the gardens and getting lost in the maze. Very interesting and informative. You need good sensible walking shoes on as some parts were muddy and a few steep parts lovely views. Went into the small cafe and had a nice good of tea and homemade coffee cake. Brought a few nice gifts in... More

1st time we've been here even though it's fairly local.. such a beautiful place especially all the different coloured leaves on the trees, lovely walks and so peaceful.. the little ones loved doing the trail and finding the clues. Will definitely go again

This is an incredibly interesting place to visit, giving marvellous insights into C18th garden design - plus its set in glorious countryside so the views beyond its borders are brilliant too. We spent about an hour and a half here, and found it enjoyable and stimulating - plus the opportunity to buy some of the heritage apples and pears grown... More
