The one day Cotswolds mystery tour was our first introduction to the Cotswolds. Robin (Scotty), our personable and knowledgeable guide, drove us down lanes barely wide enough for one vehicle, let alone two, although these were two way roads. Drivers are very polite here in terms of yielding. As we meandered through the charming thatch roofed villages and visited historic churches dating back to the Norman conquest, Scotty talked with us about the history of the Cotswolds and its agricultural economy. We learned a lot. An added treat was seeing the location sites where two favorite British TV series, Father Brown and Midsomer Murders were filmed. Lunch in a very old medieval pub was a treat. This tour provides an enjoyable and instructive introduction to the Cotswolds in a small group environment with a very personalized feel. Highly recommended along with this local company’s excellent Secret Cottage tour. A great way to spend two days in the Cotswolds or as a day trip(s).

Our guide Scotty drove 5 of us around the quaint villages and rolling hills of the Cotswolds while telling us about the history of the area. Our first stop was Father Brown’s parish church where the BBC mystery series is filmed. He drove us down roads we would never find on our own. He actually got out several times and opened gates so we could drive through farm lands. We stopped in several small villages and enjoyed Scotty’s commentary. We had lunch in a charming 16th century inn. We took this tour first and the next day took the Secret Cottage tour run by the same company. The tours do not overlap and I recommend taking both. These two days will give you a real sense of life in the Cotswolds.

Scotty was our guide and driver for this tour. He was enthusiastic, highly knowledgeable, engaging and very friendly. He stopped for photos on request and answered every question asked. A recent reviewer chose to rate this tour as “average” because of difficulty in obtaining advance information about the destinations to be visited. Why would anyone reasonably expect to receive a detailed itinerary for something known as “The Mystery Tour”?? This tour is not for shoppers. I won’t reveal the destinations that we visited with Scotty; but would say that we hit virtually every small, out of the way village that we had meticulously researched for our trip wish list. It was a marvelous day and a highlight of our vacation.

My husband and I took the Mystery Tour in May. It was very difficult to get any itinerary information (what places we would be going to) from Polly before booking. Our driver (also our tour guide) was very pleasant but we were 6 people in a van so if you are in the back row it is very hard to hear. Also no opening windows for taking photos or getting fresh air. We didn't go to the Slaughters, Bourton on the Water or a few other popular/scenic areas. We were told that it too difficult to find parking. We had a 20 minutes in Stow on Wold at the end of the day but that was the only town we stopped in and could look around the shops. The bulk of the day was mostly driving around. If doing it again I would book with a different tour operator. My advice is to book your Cotwold tour early. The mystery tour was the only one that still had availablity when we were booking which tells you something.
