Overview
More
Each year a changing selection of 150 paintings and drawings from the museum’s significant collection of works by Sir Alfred Munnings is hung chronologically throughout eight rooms. 2018 marks the 250th anniversary of the Royal Academy and the museum is celebrating Sir Alfred Munnings’ sixty year association with it by highlighting works he exhibited there. Important letters, artefacts and photographs are also on display. Munnings and and the River: In the early 1940s, following the requisition of his home by the military, Munnings worked and painted on Exmoor. Here he produced stunning images of the hills and rivers all around him. In 2018 a major series of these works will be included in this special exhibition which explores his artistic and literary responses to the river, a subject with which he had a great affinity and which remained a constant motif. The museum has a garden Cafe open from 10am-5pm, Weds-Sun serving coffee, lunch, tea and cake. Plenty of free parking.

Very impressive collection of Munning's art - one of my favourite British painters who mastered light and colour. Horses, landscapes, and portraits take on a different look with Munnings. The museum is his home which makes it extra special. And visit the cafe for a...More

Very interesting museum about Alfred Munnings, his life & paintings. Good layout using the different rooms in the house, showing his style evolving through the years.

WE thouroughly enjoyed our visit, such an interesting afternoon I never realised just how much was packed into this museum. Set in a beautiful garden with a lovely tea room well worth a visit if you're in the area.

For those of a certain age, this museum arouses so many delightful memories. Alfred Munnings was so celebrated an artist during his life-time and his equestrian paintings so familiar that like fashions he seemed to fall off the radar field when "modernisism" took over. However...More

I do hope when you say 'neglected' you mean still not known by enough people! The 92 volunteers who help run and steward the house take great care of it.

What a lovely place to sit, eat and while away a summer afternoon. The food was fantastic, especially the cakes, the staff were friendly and helpful and it was great to be able to sit outside. I will definitely go back.
