We visited on one of the open days with the pumping engine in steam. I hadn’t realised the centre even existed until looking for somewhere to make up the “cultural” element of a friend’s birthday celebration. The centre hides its light under a bushel to...More

Wonderful open day run by volunteers. (Check their website for open days). The water wheel and steam engines are the main attraction but there were also vintage bicycles, motor bikes and a Hillman Minx car when we attended. They have a cafe with home made cakes.!...More

It is well worth keeping an eye out for the Centre's Open Days - they are not to be missed. We visited the Centre on one in September 2017. The waterwheel and its companion steam engine are most impressive. As one might expect, they are...More

We visited on an open day when the waterwheel engine was in steam and many other old engines had been brought. Steam engines, gas engines, fascinating.

I went the centre on an open day & was really impressed by the huge working original equipment, working models & mini steam engines. Although not a large place I managed to spend a good couple of hours there.

I'm not a steam nut, but the sight of this powerful engine slogging away with a full head of steam is certainly impressive, but more fascinating to me is the extraordinary inventiveness of a Victorian engineer in designing a pump to lift clean water from...More

This is a very well kept attraction for visitors and locals alike - certainly worth visiting on their open days.

There's a giant Waterwheel, and a super steam engine to watch, and to learn the early history of distributing clean water around the town. Many of the old pipes are still in use, so they knew how to do things back then!

Be aware this attraction isn't open all the time but the flags and signs will be out to show you where it is when it's open! When you get down to the waterworks it's worth it, there is the history of the whole town water...More
