Since its foundation in 1196, Torre Abbey has witnessed, survived and even played a role in some epic moments of history. It is one of the best buildings in the country to tell the story of 800 years of Catholicism between 1196 and 1930. This museum uses a clever mix of authentic artefacts with hi-tech interpretation. From talking portraits and statues to interactive displays and one of the largest fine art collections in the South West, there really is something for everyone. Follow the garden trails or pick up a family guide or Experts' Choice to discover many hidden mysteries. With a wealth of exotic plants, the gardens are a tranquil haven of beauty and pleasure and the perfect setting in which to relax, stroll or picnic. Children can explore the garden and bring the Abbey to life using our special discovery backpacks. Browse our shop stocked with a range of souvenirs, gifts and books or sit down and enjoy a selection of drinks, snacks and light meals in the tearooms. The house, Spanish Barn and Palm House are licensed for civil weddings, partnership ceremonies and christenings. Torre Abbey can also cater for functions, corporate hospitality or training events. A varied programme of events takes place at Torre Abbey throughout the year. Tours of the house are available out of hours to groups of 30 or more. Following the recent restoration project, the Abbey now boasts a new educational suite which provides opportunities for students of all ages to get involved and explore the Abbey's history.

The abbey and house are absolutely wonderful - a fascinating history, really well explained and a wonderful art collection too. There are many hidden gems here and plenty of historical artefacts. The grounds are beautifully maintained, the gardens are lovely and the ruins and remains of the original abbey very atmospheric. It is certainly one to put on the list... More

I wasn't sure about visiting the Abbey with a 7 year old but there was so much to engege him with all the interactive exhibitions and the dressing up section. I ended up throughly enjoying the time we spent there. We caught the little train that go's round Torquay and it dropped us outside the Abbey door and we even... More

Very well presented history of the abbey and house. Just the right size and amount of exhibits to be interesting and informative without having lots of tiny cards to read. I liked the short monologues by actors playing the parts of historical characters. Great gardens and palm house.

Hi Thanks you so much for your warm feedback. As you say, the Abbey is really interactive, with the "talking plates" being a particular highlight. The gardens are also looking amazing at the moment, thanks to the work of our brilliant team of volunteers. We look forward to welcoming you back again in the future. Matt More

We last walked through these gardens as winter was just setting in but what a difference a few months make. Upon entering the gardens we were entertained by a pair of Jays. The walk through the grounds was excellent as we passed beds of beautiful flowers accompanied by the smell of wild garlic. Several gardeners were hard at work maintaining... More

We are so glad to hear that you enjoy our gardens as much as we do. Our head gardener Ali and her team of volunteers work so hard to make it the beautiful oasis of tranquillity it is. We love seeing the seasonal changes too - there's definitely worse places to work! Please kindly spread the word and look forward... More

We attempted to visit Torre Abbey on Thursday 6th April having checked their website where it stated it would be closed from the 7th to the 9th for the Grinagog Festival. When we got there it was closed, no notices to explain why. As we had walked from our hotel near Meadfoot beach we were not impressed. This suggests incompetence... More

I am mortified to hear of your experience, which falls well short of the excellence in the customer experience we strive for. This was a genuine mistake by a member of staff, while we were in the middle of our ongoing website redesign. If you will kindly contact me via torreabbeyenquiries@torbay.gov.uk I will respond to you personally and I apologise... More

Torre Abbey presents its history in a very entertaining way. eg. a portrait that talks and in another room with a table set for dinner for some very famous guests, the plates have pictures of the talking faces of the guests. I could imagine children running round trying to catch which one was speaking. My main interest was in the current... More
